Hey all,
I relocated for work for a year to St Croix back in 2017. After Hurricane Maria swept through, I lasted only two months because of the post-hurricane conditions. I've enjoyed my time there.
Now, my company promoted me and wants me back for a couple of more years. I found out housing has more than doubled (I was staying at St C back then) because of the refinery. I'm also planning to ship my car here. Last time, I bought an island car and sold it right back.
The question is: Is there still a duty for non-US manufacture cars? My co-worker, who is local, said they've suspended collection of the fee, according to this article: https://stcroix source .com/2019/07/10/irb-says-theres-no-plan-b-if-excise-tax-appeal-loses/
I really want to ship my 2018 Toyota Tacoma but it was made in Mexico. My other car is a 2002 Honda Accord made in the US. My company is willing to pay up to $3000 in shipping fees. I'm planning to use Blue Ocean shipping.
Any thoughts?

That article has to do with Excise Tax, an import tax paid mostly for commercial products (businesses pay it outright, then they pass it onto consumers. AKA: hidden tax).
What your referring to is a fee (technically not a tax) attached to shipping a vehicle manufactured outside of the US, a Customs Fee. Since we’re a territory, we fall outside of NAFTA trade agreements (which will hopefully change with the new USMCA trade deal).
BLUE WATER- I drove my Chevy pickup to the port in Fort Lauderdale, Blue Ocean took it from there. It arrived in STX a week later. Ferrol Trucking (through Blue Water) can receive your vehicle, and take care of all your BMV paperwork/plates. They worked great for me. Truck arrived in great shape and it was ready to drive.
I think you’d be happier with the Tacoma as opposed to your Honda Accord on STX. If your Honda was a CRV, I’d say bring that. SUV’s (all wheel drive preferably) and trucks (preferably 4x4) just handle the roads better here. Not to far off every paved road... is a dirt road.

Thanks for the explanation. Bummer, I guess I can't avoid the 6% duty fee. I will see if my company can cover more of the cost.

good luck on finding housing , i think thats going to be the biggest hurdle
