This is interesting. Very good if true. I just wonder what will happen once all the workers have completed their FEMA assigned work and go back to the mainland?

I see another murder yesterday (or the day before), I just hope that cancer doesn't destroy the island too much.

Live will go on as it was before.

I'm no realtor but it seems there are alot of people buying (not FEMA) but Limetree in St Croix. Maybe that's part of the rise.

My wife and I are closing on a home next week so we’ve made a couple of trips since October as we start to get a feel for the island.  We’ve met a few folks and get the feeling that the level of investment in the island, both infrastructure and private investment is a positive sign, that will have a long-term impact.

While we’re far from experts on the island we can see it has both ‘pluses and minuses’, we will be seasonal residents but at the same time we want to become part of the community versus just being on vacation.

I think our biggest impression of the island so far is how welcoming the people have been.  On our 2nd visit we had something of an Airbnb disaster on arrival (no owner and couldn’t check-in) at 7:30pm on December 27th.  The staff at Duggans Reef restaurant were able to find a room at the Company House Hotel, while we ate dinner.  It turned out to be a nice room and being in town ended up big plus as we could walk to all the restaurants.  A big thanks to everyone who helped.

Looking forward, we’ll keep an open mind and positive attitude as we embark on this next adventure of our lives.

In addition to open mind and positive attitude bring your sense of humor too. That goes along way when dealing with the inefficiencies here.  Many thing are so inefficient it is funny.

When will FEMA workers start returning to the mainland? I know some have left and a bunch are still there. Is there a deadline or goal date? I ask because I'm hoping the rental market opens up a bit. A friend on STT is predicting May or June. What do you think?

Yes, my favorite was after the new high speed ferry from STX to St Thomas hit a rock and was out of commission for a while and someone wrote, "This is why we can't have nice things!" LOL

I have been sailing here for decades - I may not know where all the rocks are but I sure know where they are NOT.

A FEMA worker told me in Oct that they were supposed to be done by April 15.

I spoke with a senior FEMA IT person on December 27th who claimed the work would go on for several more years.  We discussed new high tech power poles, improvements to the airport and major improvements to the islands roads and other infrastructure. I also learned that no FEMA employee can be on any assignment for mor than 50 weeks.  So FEMA continually rotates people until the overall job is complete.  I only hope he is correct in his summary.

The rental that will be vacated by recovery people will quickly be filled with refinery people.

I wonder how much of this will actually take place now that all the federal disaster funding has a requirement to be paid back?

Would they start selling off "excess" equipment?  And ship it to another island via Antonov...

Can you please provide a source that states the USVI is required to pay back 100% of FEMA funds? I've not read or heard this. Thanks.
