Schools in USVI

I'm looking for information on good schools in USVI for my young son, specifically STX and STT. I'm not sure if private schooling will be within my budget. Is private schooling necessary? Are the public schools good? I've heard public schools are better on STX is that true? Are public schools on STT just as good? If I was to make my move solely dependent on where the best schools are which island would be the best to choose?

What kind of private school? A parochial school will be less, but the others are 10-15,000 a year.

Lizzie: You might want to spend some time reading up on the challenges in the VI, especially for children. The Community Foundation has the Kids Count program and releases information each year: http://www.aecf.org/where-we-work/location/vi/
I'm not sure how you find the information that compares our schools to those in the states, but I fear we do not perform favorably. Schools are one of the reasons that people leave the USVI. Health care is another. I don't want to dissuade you, but please do your research. A longish visit to check the place out is a good idea. 😉

P.S. Traveling by plane between St Thomas and St Croix costs somewhere around $175 or so round trip.

Thanks. I will look into that. I intend on researching thoroughly before moving. Can the schools in USVI be any worse then the public schools in NYC? Is the same true for private school? If private school is the best way to go on the island I will save accordingly to make that a priority.

"How old is your son?
Joseph E Sibilly is a good public grade school on STT and one can always explore Montessori and Antilles for possible lower tuition fees if you qualify.
Sts. Peter and Paul, All Saints, Lutheran schools are also a possibility and less costly than private. If your son is in high school, I wouldn't recommend a public school. Period."

Corporal punishment is still permitted, and still happens, in VI public schools. Factor that into your definition of "worse".

Oh yikes! I'd love to talk to someone who has young kids in the school system.
