I have a buyer for my car. Two questions:

1. How do I transfer title?

2. How do I ferry the car from STX to STT?

Look at the FAQ's for how to ship between islands.

Transferring title is just a matter of filling out the form on back, signaling transfer of ownership. The new owner will then work with the title state originator to get a new title full in their name.

Also, recall that both the title and registration needs to be notarized. (normal cost is $5 each). Give the buyer a photocopy of your drivers license too, they'll need it at the MVD.

You also need a notarized Bill of Sale.

Is there a standard form for the bill of sale?

2 weeks ago, I bought a car here on STX. The following documents were stapled together and handed over. Then 45 min later, they called my number, I paid $40 to the cashier, received my new title and registration and I left. -I was done-.

1) USVI title in sellers name. On the back of the title "Transfer by owner" was filled out by both parties and notarized. (This counted as "the bill of sale".)
2) vehicle registration in the sellers name. The back was filled out by both parties and notarized.
3) An application for a new title form that I got at the MVD outside inspection booth. After I filled it out, the inspector had to sign near the bottom of it.
4) Proof of insurance in my name.
5) Photo copy of the sellers drivers license.
6) They made a photo copy of my drivers license and attached it.
7) Some other form they produced showing the previous insurance/registration was canceled. (stamped with a red canceled stamp)

Here's a hot tip: There is a notary at the DMV. Her "office" is the small white table under the nearby tree (no chairs). I found her 30 feet away by the inspection booth since it was lightly raining. She charges $5 per page, which is the going rate.

That is brilliant!!! On St. John, we have to schlep all around to find out which of the 3 that are here are available. 🙂

According to the M/V Norma H II web site, I need to take the receipt for the car purchase to the Lt Gov's office and get a letter to take to the inspection lane. Anyone done this? Where on STX is that office?

I called Chris at Norma H II. She said the law has been changed. I no longer need to do the Lt. Governor's Office thing.

Went to DMV yesterday. 20 minutes to get the title; no charge. As Brian suggested, went to the notary at her little table under the trees. I told her she had a beautiful office. 🙂 Notarized the title and registration. $5 each. The whole process was easier than I expected.

I'll take the car to the ferry dock at Gallows Bay Next Wednesday, April 6, between 13:00 and 17:00. Put title, registration, and copy of my VI driving license in the glove box.

Flight leaves at 18:00; remain overnight in San Juan. Then on to JFK and Kyiv. Arrive Tbilisi April 8. Long trip. At least, I won't arrive in winter!

Update on this info/thread:

If you're shipping a car off island and your title shows a lien (such as from a car loan), you must first pay off the loan, get a new title showing no lien, then take the new title to the Lt Gov's office in Govt house building on King St in Csted to get a letter showing no liens (they check the title database and give it to you right there), then take the letter and your new title back to the BMV to get a letter authorizing export.
