Shipping vs. Purchasing a Car

My husband and I are planning a move to St. Croix in April and are trying to determine if it is more cost effective to ship our Toyota Prius or purchase an "island car" upon arriving. We would most likely drive our car and belongings to Florida (as it will be easier to fly with our dog out of Florida, as opposed to Wisconsin). Does anyone have any insight on cost for shipping, registration, etc. vs. purchasing a reliable small car on the island?

for me it was cheaper for me to ship my car. if i had bought one here it would have been a used car. why buy a used car when i can ship down my car for cheaper.

Thanks for the replies. I'm aware there is a lot of info and have found multiple companies that offer shipment. What I was hoping for was someone to perhaps share their experience of what their costs were (certain companies overpriced, bad experiences?) and if maybe they have insight into when shipping doesn't make sense and it would be smarter to purchase a car on island. For example, if your car is over a certain weight, below a certain value, etc. Also, I've read a lot about the cars for sale on the island being overpriced and the possibility of getting ripped off. Does anyone have any insight on their own experiences purchasing a car? Place to go, stay away from, machanic to look one over before purchase, etc.?

I'm continuing to scroll through past posts on the forum as well but would appreciate any additional info.

Good Morning!
We are moving to St Croix next week and just dropped our car off at the port yesterday.
We drove from Ohio to reduce the cost. It would of been around $2,200 from Ohio and it was $1,475 from Port Everglades to STX.
We worked with Dorothy @ Blue Ocean Transport for our auto and personal items and received great service!
Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions!

i shipped mine in 2004, it was about 2000 total. it took a bit longer for me to get my car-more like a month . seems crawley was also shipping a lot of new cars at the time and my car was not a priority.

I shipped mine and don't regret it. I know the history of my own car where buying a car here is like a box of chocolates "ya never know what your gonna get".

We shipped my truck here in 2013 from Miami (Port Everglades) on Sea Star (now TOTE). Cost around $1450. Had a bit of drama at the port because the agent told us we could load up the bed as long as it was covered and locked. The shipping company disagreed, they had discontinued the practice because of theft in PR and did not have a rate for a loaded vehicle. After much wailing and gnashing of teeth, signing of waivers, and phone calls from the port manager to the company president, our truck was shipped at no extra cost to us but with a promise that the agent on St Thomas would get a bill for the excess weight. Truck arrived two weeks later (dockworker strike in San Juan) completely intact. Still driving it today.

We also bought a vehicle here, from friends leaving island, and that's still going, too.
