Shopping for food East End STX

Schooner Bay Market in Gallows Bay is good for many things, but you'll pay more, and it doesn't have as wide a selection as Plaza.

Ziggy's gas & market way out east end road has a small selection for quick pickups, but again, you'll pay.

There is Ziggy's, the gas station/convenience store that also has prepared food and plate lunches and Good Spirits at the reef and Ocean Terrace Restaurant, Deli and convenience store on the Seiera Verde Rd. You can walk to Ziggy's from Coakley

We always took a BIG cooler & shopped @ Cost u Less & Plaza Extra. I really like Plaza West the best!
Always took a big chunk of your morning to do the shopping as we went to almost every store, then drove back to the East End.

there is a little grocery on the south shore across from where they aren't building the resort. Starts with an M? Maybe? Anyone?

The reality of living east is the closest real grocery store is Pueblo. Schooner is the closest store but its small and very overpriced but they do have a great salad bar and a decent deli and bakery. One of the nice things about east is that it is pretty much just residential. It may seem like a bit of a pain at first but you get used to it very quickly. Think of it as living in a suburb, you gotta drive 15 minutes to get out of the suburb and get somewhere! I know people that use a cooler but I've never had to for grocery shopping. It's really not that far.

You need the cooler because you often end up going to two or three stores to get everything you need or least everything that is available.

Edward: Good luck with the grocery situation out east. We lived at the Reef for two winters and really got tired of having to go to Plaza or Foodtown to do grocery shopping. Yes, it's only about 15-20 minutes, but in reality, it seems like much longer than that. We ended up deciding to rent much closer to town and amenities in part because we tired of the drive to anywhere we wanted to be.

@loungestx: I know the place you're referring to, but can't recall the name. But I wouldn't really call it a "grocery store." It's really along the lines of Ziggy's--a place to hit when you're in desperate need of milk or rum, but not much else. And their hours can be iffy.

The small store on the south shore is called Milgie's (sp?)

Then I really really don't need a cooler. There's no way I'm doing more then one grocery store a day. 😉 There is never a meal I need that bad. I'd much rather adapt.

Don't be so sure. Cost U Less has good produce, but many staple items are sold in bulk discount store packaging (3 large jars of jelly ) so you will need to shop someplace else for some staple items. If you don't shop at Cost U Less then you give up some cost savings.

Don't save never until you have been here for sometime and seen for your self that things are diffrent.

I never found it to be a big deal, you tend to drive past different mkts as you go about your day so you stop in. I drive half an hour to the mkt I shop at in NY and don't think anything of it. I wouldn't want to live in the area the mkt is so that is the trade off, no big deal I use a car.

Does anyone know what that building that is shut down near Tide Village is? Did it used to be a Grocery store? It has very few Windows but looks like it would make a perfect small-medium sized market. Seems like a real business opportunity!

I've been here 8 years, I think that's long enough to know I don't want to go to 3 or even two stores in one day. I'm not saying it's wrong to go to three in one day but that's more then my personal tolerance for grocery store nonsense, especially after dealing with work nonsense. 😉 I will usually stop at a different store for different things about once maybe twice a week. Just did cost u less yesterday and of coarse I managed to forget the gargantuan sized paper towels....but we're just going to have to do without till I feel up to it!

Depending on where you are on the EE of STX & where you shop will determine if you need a cooler.
Me I was as far east as one could get, so it was like 20 mins just to C'sted. Now the outside temps range in the mid 80's year round with a beautiful sun shinning almost daily heating up the inside of my car to lets say 100 degrees. Now if I stop at pueblo @ orange grove, then another stop @ schooner bay & final out at good spirts formerly lori's, my groceries would be melted with out the aide of the cooler.
Ad in the fact the roads only get fixed once per yr near the tri-athalon, you hit a pot hole......flat tire.......your ice cream is now hot chocolate!

Oh, yes, Kings - across from Pearl B. I liked it when it was a store - convenient to just run in when you've passed up all the rest of the places. Haven't seen anything being done with that in over 5 years.
