SIN TAX CLAIMS ITS FIRST VICTIM

I know there are several board readers who are craft beer lovers so I'm posting this as a service to you.

Unfortunately, Ale House in Gallows Bay, STX (behind Caribbean Printing) is closing its doors. They are having an inventory and close out sale starting immediately weekdays from 3 pm to 6 pm and Saturdays from noon to 6 pm until everything is gone. All inventory, fixtures, shelves and coolers must be sold. Cash or credit card only, no checks accepted.

I'm sad that this store is closing because it was the only place on STX where you could find these unique European and American craft beers. The freight cost to get them here was high and the addition of the sin tax made them cost prohibitive for many of the regular customers.

However, now is your opportunity to get your favorite brew at a discount.

I was wondering when I saw the ad in the paper. He makes it sound like he's not closing but I had a feeling he was after talking to him. Sad
I'm sure there will be many more victims as well. I'm sure Sanes and the rest of the retards that voted this bill in will see the light and try to repeal. Or do they want to run off businesses? Better to tax the citizens then reel in spending.

I met him when I first moved here before he had opened, what a great guy and super super knowledgeable on the topic of beer.

I hope everything works out for him.

We have the Frenchtown brewery here. I don't drink, but hope it survives. Lots of folks love it.

It also sucks that Coke Zero which has no sugar and Becks NA which has no sugar or alcohol falls under the sin tax. How is that? Isn't that illogical if it is a sin tax? Is water next? Do they tax all the sugar filled juices that are drank by the case?

Last I saw from BIR it's Carbonated Drinks only as far as non-alcoholic goes. Doesn't say anything about sugar so presumably tonic water would be included.

The upside of sin tax is that I sin much less...at least in USVI. I started loosing weight which is very nice. Case of Heineken lasts me 6 weeks now.

I remember I quit smoking 20 years ago when gov started heavily taxing cigs. Saved me at least $25-30 K plus my health is perfect.

Dan is a really nice guy and it is indeed sad that the doors are closing. . . Mapp and the others that voted in the sin tax arent going to repeal the crap law that it is until it affects what they consume, another weak ploy by govt here that in long run puts more burden on citizens that choose to consume certain substances rather than a govt that doesnt spend like a DRUNKEN sailor

Here is the goof with the law though...... Frenchtown brewery I think is exempt as well as Crucian and Capt. Morgan. I believe that the tax on booze is levied as a excise tax. Since all 3 are locally produced no excise ...... could be wrong but was told that was the way it was going to work

Yes, excise tax on imports. I don't know if I got a clear answer on that either. In theory the local brewery would not be included. But Crucian is shipped to the states for bottling and then shipped back as far as I know.

Yes, both Cruzan and Captain Morgan are shipped off island in bulk and bottled elsewhere...Cruzan in Kentucky and Captain in Chicago.
