Anyone have any experience with SkyMed VI? Any thoughts?

It's an insurance policy to cover air evacuation to Puerto Rico or the mainland. $120/year for individual. $240 for family.

Check out MASA and Sky Med - compare the coverage and price. I used to have Sky Med and switched to MASA about 2 years ago. I have never (thankfully) had to use the service.

Edward: Read the small print carefully. Most med evac policies read that they will take you to the nearest facility. That is almost always Puerto Rico. MASA has a policy that will take you where you want, at an extra cost, of course.

SkyMed works similarly. You can get the cheap policy and be flown to PR, or you can pay more and go to the nearest U.S. mainland city (Miami if your'e here, elsewhere if you're in other parts of the Caribbean like Belize), or you can pay even more and specify exactly which city you want to go to on the U.S. mainland. None of the policies are terribly expensive given the fact that it would cost tens of thousands to finance a medical evacuation yourself.

There is even a company that caters to motorcyclists, so they'll fly your bike home, too. Can't remember the name of the company, though...

I use SkyMed. I have used MASA in the past, both policies are comparable. Both offer discounts at local stores, too. It's a great thing to have - $120/year is nothing in the grand scheme of things.

I had to be medically evacuated home from the Canary Islands in May, and my insurance, MAPFRE, covered it. I thought I was going to have to work for the rest of my life to pay the evac bill, and I didn't even know that was covered. Read the fine print in your existing plan to see if it's covered.

for non-full time Vi residents, you might look at Medjet Assist. They take you whereever you want to go, and it does not have to be medically necessary, you just have to be in the hospital more than 150 miles from home...
We have friends who had real issues with the MASA outfit, as they would only transport from stx to San Juan, and I guess some hospitals there are much better (or worse, depending on the viewpoint) than others...they were sent to someplace called Centro Medico, which is understand is the main government supported hospital system...some folks from PR also have told us it is not a good place....

Major medical always covers air evacuation. Hospitals will not accept you for transfer without major medical. And MASA doesn't have to transport you if the hospital doesn't accept you.

I know. I am a doctor here who once had to be evacuated, and I arrange evacuations whenever necessary.

So unless you have the "Fly me only to Kentucky Plan" Masa and Skymed are unnecessary and I think the salespeople know this but are not candid.
