St. Thomas Airport rental car issues

We just got back from going over to St. Thomas for the day via Seaborne/airport. We live on St. Croix.
Yes, I know, you should always reserve a car in advance but I just didn't this time.
...Avis at the St. Thomas Seaplane terminal always works out with no reservations or issues when we come over that way. Can't say the same for Avis at the airport. We were advised, abruptly and rudely by the lady at Avis airport "no reservation, no car!"...not even, let me check our other locations....
Okay, fine, my fault for not reserving. After same with Budget and Hertz there, we quickly called Avis down the road at Seaplane (our tried and true) and they said they could have a car available for us....but we had to wait for them to get it brought over from the...AIRPORT!
Which did happen after we paid a taxi to take us to the seaplane terminal.
Ridiculous! And I will be writing Avis.

...My husband handled the call and had just told me there was a car ready at the
Seaplane terminal so I wouldn't cause a scene at the airport and blow the whole deal I guess. Then when returning, I felt awful for the huge planeload of tourists that just landed at the airport. The line at Budget was over 20 people deep with only 2 desk workers. There has to be a better way and I wish the other non-corporate giant car rental companies on St Thomas would be more visible at the airport! We drove by Amalie rental and it was full of cars. This is the first encounter people have on island after getting off a plane? Horrible.

Just wondering why your husband isn't tell them you were at the airport and what they had told you? May have saved you cab fare. Just saying. A lot of the off property companies do pretty good and pick up their renters.

They were abrupt, unhelpful and just told us they had no cars when clearly they did. He figured it was just another worker on a power trip and really wanted to get a car. I think he figured if we told them we had called the other location the car would have suddenly not been available. I guess it comes from years of dealing with vindictive people.
