Criminals usually go back to places they are familiar with. She was found and arrested in California

Sauter Arrested in San Diego

BY SOURCE STAFF — JANUARY 31, 2014

Rosemary Sauter, the St. Thomas realtor who disappeared from the territory in early 2010, allegedly taking millions of dollars in client money with her, was arrested by the FBI Thursday in San Diego.

FBI Special Agent Darrell Foxworth, of the bureau's San Diego office, said Sauter was arrested near Fallbrook, Calif., without incident. She was arrested by FBI agents with the assistance of deputies from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, pursuant to a federal arrest warrant.

On Friday, Sauter was fingerprinted and photographed at the FBI San Diego Field Office and booked into San Diego's Metropolitan Correctional Center.

V.I. Attorney General Vincent Frazer said Friday afternoon he expects his office to bring her back to the territory for prosecution.

"Rosemary Sauter came to St. Thomas a felon — guilty of swindling a California development company out of more than $25,000 in 1981 — and lied about her conviction so that she could sell real estate in the Virgin Islands.

An investigation by The Daily News has found that Sauter was arrested in 1983 and accused of taking more than $25,000 from Lewis W. Douglas Development Co. in February and March of 1981, when she was 29 years old."

She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 120 days in the San Francisco County Jail and five years’ probation for felony grand theft.

It was inevitable that she'd eventually be tracked down. Back when she was first convicted in the 80s the tracking technology was in its infancy but the advances in that technology has resulted in countless of her ilk being apprehended worldwide. It's also made it far easier to track down past records which even in recent years past entailed huge and time-consuming efforts to unearth and for most individuals and agencies wasn't worth the effort and expense.

Felons and miscreants "hiding out" here and running local businesses were very common just a few decades ago but that's rapidly changed and nowhere is much of a safe haven these days.

Probably false hope to think that she still has left some of that money she stole so that those she defrauded can at least get something back - but many will at least feel some vindication when she's sitting behind bars where she belongs.

It's so sad she chose this path.
It's amazing it took so long to find her as she does (did) stand out in a crowd.
It will be interesting to see the outcome of this continuing saga.

Great line this morning. A lady looked at the picture of Rosemary on the front page of today's Daily News (from a court appearance before she absconded) with the headline "Sauter in court today" and said, "Can't she buy a new dress for court?" LOL

From the article, it seems she just bought an airline ticket to Miami and left the airport with 4 pieces of luggage in 2010.

Couldn't understand why a few months sago she sent a payment for her taxes owed. I am sure this is how they tracked her down. Wonder why someone on the lam would do that?

Ronnie, you can't be serious????
Where did you hear that!

Guess she didn't want all her properties to go to auction and lose them like so many that were affected by her absconding with their escrow deposits for their "dream homes." This theft was a true nightmare for those people and the Realtors involved in those transactions.

Making bail and house arrest are two different things........

"If she makes $1.25 million bail, Sauter-Frett will be on home confinement and electronic monitoring"

This is a pretty good synopsis of the Sauter saga:

Cruzan: She only has to come up with $125,000. If she stole $800,000+, she should be able to come up with that...

EE: 10% is the option of the judge. The defense requested it, The Judge sided with the Government.
To me that means the 10% was denied.

Don't think it works that way.

Court sets bail and parameters.

The defendant can come up with all the money or any form of assets that the court will accept.

Usually a second party (Bail Bondsman) will put up the bond and the percentage that he or she charges is based on risk of the defendant showing up for court.
