Anybody know who is open/closed for the holidays?
We are wanting to go out on Thursday night (Xmas eve) and we have no plans for new-years, but don't want to spend a lot for a forgettable evening.

I LOVE PB&J - don't joke with that 🙂

how about more specifically, we have been trying to make plans to go to Dashi with our friends for a few weeks but it keeps not working out... anyone know if Dashi is open on Christmas eve?

Dashi is open tonight, closed tomorrow, Christmas, and Boxing Day. They're always closed Sunday and Monday, so i guess they're reopening next Tuesday.

To add to the restaurant review and speaking of Dashi, I went there a few weeks ago and was pretty disappointed. The good: decently priced sake, big rolls, really nice atmosphere (we sat outside). The bad: the rolls had pretty much no flavor, which was I guess the only thing but for $100 I was really hoping for more. All you could taste was the rice and I've never used so much soy sauce or wasabi in my life. I really wanted to love it there but unfortunately it just didn't happen.

Went to Cultured Pelican last night for the first time. Crunchy, oiled bread and rolls served in a paper bag with white bean puree, roasted garlic, and parmesan for dipping. My gf and I split a pizza which was made fresh and the crust was very crunchy. I liked it, my gf didn't love it. Her folks got a mahi dish and the manicotti and they both cleaned their plates. Service was good, specials looked great, and it was a great sunset view! The desserts were skillfully crafted. Coconut tiramisu and triple choc creme brulee were slam dunks. Very nice experience.

Went to Rowdy Joes the other night for dinner. It was so delicious. I had the chicken dumpling soup and the fried Pork Wontons, those Wontons are to die for. My husband had the steak chili, it was one of the specials, he loved it. Our friends had the Mahi encrusted with bacon and the fish tacos. They wiped there plates clean.
I noticed they had a couple of new things on there menu that I gotta go back to try.

We went to The restaurant at the Palms for Christmas Eve dinner - there were 4 of us...
we were seated in the corner at a larger table, while there were plenty of 4 tops open... it was just strange we were kinda squished between a table of other people and the wall.
Anyway -
Starters:
the 2 ladies got the butternut squash shrimp soup and the 2 guys got caesar salads - we all really enjoyed our own. I tasted the Salad and honestly would think that a $10 caeser would have some anchovies on it, call me crazy.
Appetizers:
Wonton wrapped shrimp - they were delicious. - we forgot to ask how many came, and it was only 3 shrimp.
Entrees:
1 Salmon entree -
1 Mahi Entree
2 Prime Rib entrees

The Salmon and one of the prime ribs were slightly over cooked. The Mahi was good - not great. The other prime rib (mine) was cooked to order, but was missing the horseradish sauce.
the kicker came when our friend dug into his twice-baked potato and pulled out a full size plastic baggie -
We sent back his plate (his prime rib was also one of the over-cooked meals) and they returned almost immediately with a new plate (horseradish included). Nobody came by to apologize or ask if they could do anything.

We asked to see a manager and our waitress asked "the one who's working tonight?" - "yes" we replied.
after about 15 minutes.. the manager never came so we asked the server again. She proceeded to tell us that she didn't tell the manager because the manager was at another table seated, and celebrating the holiday. In any case - she finally told the manager that we wanted to speak with somebody and the general manager of the hotel approached our table.
We let our friend (the one with the plastic bag in his food) tell the story including the lack of apology, and she was silent for a bit and then offered to comp the "meal" - we were appreciative and didn't actually realize she meant that the entire dinner would be comped.
But after a few minutes the server came back to our table - apologized! and took away our meal. We left a tip and took off.

Don't think We'll be going back to the palms any time soon.

CatoSTX,

Last year for Christmas eve my husband and I made reservations at the Palms for dinner. We arrived on time and were told they weren't ready to seat us (there wasn't anyone else there, apparently we were the first reservation). Then the lady turned to walk away. As she walked away I asked, "so should we wait at the bar?" and she said over her shoulder "yes, I will come get you when we are ready".

Okay, so I thought thats okay, we will have a drink first, shouldn't be too long. 1 1/2 hours later we still sat there. She had seated others, had looked at us several times (we were only 15 feet away from her), but never came to seat us and then ignored us when we tried to ask her whether or not we could be seated yet.

I also had a similar experience with plastic wrap (like saran wrap) in my food a couple of months ago. My husband went there to eat and ordered some food to bring back to the house for me. While I was eating it I found a piece of plastic wrap in it.

I don't go there anymore, it was disturbing to me to find stuff in my food that didn't belong there. I know I should have complained but I was so disgusted that I didn't bother....just decided that I didn't want to eat their food anymore. So I started eating at H2O and found I the service was quicker, MUCH more pleasant and accomodating and the quality of food was much better, plus......when I get my food I don't have to worry about what else is in it.

We had houseguests last Feb, who had visited with us at the Cormorant/Pelican Cove Condos many years ago, so we went to the Palms for dinner...such a pretty spot. Service was awful, menu offerings were pretty poor, but we stayed...a mistake. Haven't had such bad meals on stx in can't-remember-when...and it was, as I recall, pretty expensive, even if the food had been good... would not go back for certain.

Yesterday we wanted to take out from the 19th hole. They had there famous fried chicken.
So we called it in, we were I guess talking to someone that worked in the golf shop. They knew nothing of the fried chicken, we asked to be transfered to the 19th hole, they told us they don't have a phone. So the girl on the phone said she would ask about the fried chicken, when she came back to the phone she said yes they have fried chicken. Okay, now we want to know if they have a 9 pack or a 12 pack or how it comes. She did not know, so we asked her to get someone from the restaurant to come to the phone. Someone did come from the restaurant, we asked about any deals on 9 packs or 12 packs, the guy said just tell me what you want so we said a 9 pack, we said how much? he said, how about $20.
We had the chicken and it was very good, I just think if they are going to advertise on the radio carry out chicken that they need to have a phone or they need to let the people know in the golf shop what they have and how much.

Just for fyi, the numb nose person in the golf shop should have transferred you to the 19thHole @ Carambola Restaurant. You can e-mail them too at this address: carambolas19thhole@gmail.com. If I am not mistaken there is a phone for the restaurant but I don't
think it's a stand-a-lone phone number. I just looked on their web site (under Carambola Golf Club) and there's no phone # shown, only the e-mail address.

As for the price on the fried chicken, it is a dinner consisting of 4 pieces and two sides at a cost of $18.00. I don't work for them nor am I trying to sell their services, but they do have good food. Whomever you got a price for a 9 pack of fried chicken, they obviously knew about as much as the person in the golf shop.

Went to LA CAFE in F'sted the other day. We thought we should support a small, local biz, over supporting the KFC chain right next door. OOPS! That was poor decision. We both ordered cheeseburgers, even though they were gonna cost us $12.50 each with the cheese. My friend ordered the "cheese burger" as it was stated on menu, and I ordered the "blue cheese burger". Well, we both got blue cheese salad dressing atop the burgers. So, we took a bite, YUK. The burger was hard and dry, not to mention tiny. Definately not a $12.50 burger. So, if you have a craving for a burger in F'sted...go to Blue Moon!

Oh, forgot to mention, we went to KFC next door to LA CAFE, but walked out immediately because it reaked of urine! Would any stateside KFC's allow such an offensive odor?

Irijah, Yup, $20 for 9 pieces of chicken no sides. I thought it was nuts but we already plan to have it for our friends because it is so good.
I don't mind paying a little more for chicken breasts but there was only 1 of them in the box. More wings then anything.
I thought it was funny that the guy just came up with $20 off the top of his head. I should of said how about $15, I didn't know I should barter for chicken. Lol!

I'm just providing this information to anyone on this thread that might be interested in the phone number of 19th Hole@Carambola Restaurant. This goes back to the recent posting of someone calling Carambola and ended up talking to a person in the golf pro shop. Since I signed up for their e-mailing of daily menu offerings, etc., I finally saw the restaurant's direct phone contact number on it . I also heard it on the radio this am while driving. It is 340-244-5744. Lori or Pauli can be contacted for reservations & information at this number or at least have somebody who works in the restaurant area answer this number.

We went to Dashi last night and were really disappointed. We had seaweed salad and poki nachos (a special) which were both good - and apparently set the wrong tone for us.
we then waited over an Hour and a half for our sushi to be served - 5 rolls in 90+ min!? and they were mostly just.. not memorable.
There was a lobster roll that had "dashi" sauce on it - it had so much Curry in it you couldn't taste or smell anything else - the server actually told us that the sauce must've been old because the longer it 'sits" the more Curry flavor takes over.
We also had a eel roll with Avo, a Hamachi roll, a crab rangoon roll (I HATE cream cheese in my sushi, but our friends wanted it), and a spicy tuna tempura roll. The overall was that the rice and seaweed overpowered the fish - and the seaweed was too thick and chewy. The Spicy tuna was NOT spicy - they had to bring us siracha.
We will go back - probably to try the COOKed entrees.
and I want to maybe go for just Nigiri instead of the rolls.
What is it about this place that you all (those of you who do) Love? What SHOULD we be ordering? Please, because I don't usually go for a week, let alone months or years without sushi.

i usually have really awesome experiences there. there are times, when it's really busy, that i have waited awhile or that the rice was not cooked as well as it should be. I like the fact that their rolls are different - not just standard rice, fish, and nori. I always get the Pablo Escolar roll, the rainbow roll, and the one with tuna and mango. as well as a heap of others, lol. The Tokyo Nachos are yummy too - fried wontons with tuna on top, drizzled with wasabi and soy sauce. i do like all the different types of sake they have, plus their homemade ice creams are awesome - if they ever have the mayan chocolate or the 5 spice (sweet potato 5 spice was SO good) then get it - it's really yummy. However, when i go there - it's not to eat and run. it really is one of those places to sit, relax, drink, and wait. But i always feel it's worth it at the end.

The unfortunate part is that it's the only sushi place - so you either take it or leave it. That goes for the wait time, the prices, and the sometimes rushed quality. I don't find the spicy sauce to be that spicy, but i love wasabi so maybe that's just me 🙂

Went to Elizabeth's at H2O last night for their .25 cent wing nite. It runs from 9-12. It took awhile to get our food but i think there were a lot of orders in - i mean, our table ordered 60 wings lol. The wings are big and done there - not frozen. The sweet and hot were good, but i didn't think the wings were spicy, could have been hotter. The seasoning was really good, though on all of them. They have BBQ, Hot, and Sweet and Hot (i think plain is an option, too) you CANNOT take home the leftovers, though - no to go boxes are allowed. we didn't know that, or we wouldn't have ordered so many, lol. i'll go back - you can't beat $5 for 20 wings!

Bert has re-opened LA Cafe? I don't go there for the food but used to go to hang out with crazy Bert, I love that guy he's definitely a character! First time I walked in he screamed at me in a great West Indian accent "Here comes some crazy MOTHAF***ERS!" Not knowing how to respond I ordered a drink and from there had a blast talking with him about a ton of stuff. The food is definitely nothing to write home about but we always have a ridiculous time in that place. Definitely not a place to go for the faint of heart...it's an adventure!
