Yes Iris, that is the old Tutto Bene. What was the name of that place that had the awesome truffled Mac and Cheese? It was casual french, then it became awful cajun then went belly up.......

Hey thanks, what an honor! Is 12:25 a.m. too early for champagne?

sugarlander,

On the other hand, our favorite all you can eat crab place adds a grat if you are LOCAL. People's perceptions sure can mess with their policies, neither or which I agree with, and I'm sure neither would be upheld by the owners if called on it.

Went to Sale e Miele for lunch yesterday--awesome. It is not in the old Deana's, it is in the little courtyard close to it , next to Kick's and Larson studio across from it in the courtyard. You will see a little placard on the ground. They had 4 dishes for lunch, between $11 for the Caprese (mozz & tomato w/ basil salad) and $14 for the lasagna. The homemade bread is the best I've tasted. Very simple. 'Light lunch' meaning, I thought the portions were fine for a woman, but some of the men were still hungry....and giving second looks when the plates were set down. All fresh veggies, too. Try it!

Friends of mine were dining the other night at a place in town and overheard a server telling two women diners that they had to pre-pay for their meals or they wouldn't get their food. The women, naturally, were aghast and offended, as they didn't see anyone else in the establishment being asked the same. Has anyone out there heard of such a thing happening? Seemed pretty unusual (and, of course, disturbing).

Sounds like they had an unpaid tab.

Occasionally a bar will run a tab for a regular customer. They will only go so far and then request payment before service until the tab is paid. Tammy is right, that's what this sounds like. It would help if you gave more details. But no, except for an unpaid tab, I've never seen anything like this. Could your friend have misunderstood the situation?

There was no misunderstanding. My friend's table was right next to the two ladies'. Basically, the waitress came over and said to them, "That will be $11 for each of you" and presented them with the bill. The ladies looked perplexed, and the waitress said, "You pay first." One of the ladies then said something like, "I don't see anyone else paying for their food first. I'm not paying until I get my food." And then the waitress went back into the kitchen. Unfortunately, my friends left and didn't get to see how it was resolved.

The unpaid tab thing sounds like a good explanation, but given the apparent confusion and surprise on the ladies' faces, that may not apply here.

Anyway, not a big deal. Just wondering if anyone had encountered anything like this before.

I think I'd prefer not to mention the name of the establishment because at this point it's second-hand info and doesn't seem to be a common practice. No need to besmirch a place in case it was an isolated incident, innocent mistake or warranted for some reason we don't know about.

Had another great meal at Eat @ Cane Bay. It was very crowed when we arrived but we were greeted right away, we needed a table for 6 luckily a big table had just left, while waiting for the table to be cleared we had 2 other servers come to us and asked if we were being helped. Great Service.
Everyone was happy with there dinners.

Anyone know what beers are being served at the beer dinner on Monday? The options for craft beers are pretty limited on island so I'm definitely interested to hear what they'll be serving up. If you know or if you go, please share!

I know they have Smithwicks on tap right now...forgot what else

The last beer dinner featured the Belgian beer's that have recently been brought to the island by a new distributor. They are really fantastic.

Have you tried the Flemish Sour? Very different from other Belgiums.

Had dinner at EAT@Cane Bay last night. We went simply because my daughter and I wanted the NC bbq sandwich. Well, they have changed the plan. It now has sauce and isn't traditional eastern NC pulled pork. Our waitress was very nice. She offered to take it back and bring another, but said she would probably be bringing the same thing, and brought out both sauces for me to try. I told her I didn't really want either one. One sauce was thick, dark and more traditional bbq sauce then most non-NC'lians like. The other was less thick, less dark, but still sweet and basically bbq sauce. The whole point to NC bbq is NO "sauce" . I was so disappointed!! I have had the bbq sandwich there several time before and it was indeed the real thing, but not this time. People who are used to Texas style or other thick saucey bbs don't usually like NC style. I should have known it wouldn't last.:-(

Juanita . There will be no BBQ sauce served with my food,it will have a spicy or mild rub on it,with plenty of smoke flavor. If the customer wants BBQ sauce all they have to do is ask for it. I refuse to serve you a dry piece of meat,it will be moist. Just look for us at the old Frankie's Lobster reef cafe, behind Rowdy Joe's. I ate at both places while on island,Eat @ Cane bay and Rowdy Joe's. I was lucky enough to have good meals from both places. My time is soon coming, see you all soon. The place will be renamed as Above the Cliff. That was the original name. Paradise in Blue is no more,we had a quick name change, besides the proof will be seen by customer satisfaction not the name.

I agree Sugarlander! :@) Thick, dark, sweet or spicy sauce for me!;) (No disrespect to the North Carolinians-- to each their own!)

Don't get me started, sugarlander! LOL:@)

I know NC style is an acquired taste thing. I even admit after watching the travel channel (or food channel?) best bbq shows, North Carolina always comes in last. What can I say...the rest of the country has no taste! Give me vinegar (tu). Keep the ketchup and molasses and brown sugar. (td)

Looking forward to the Texas Chili Cook-Off tomorrow at Divi.

@chefnoah, A flemish sour is a sour cherry beer. Good for a few sips, but definitely an acquired taste!
