Greetings,

hiya everyone I'm so very happy to have found this site, tons of info on here. Thank you all for the time you have given to helping people like myself.!
So my husband and I will be visiting/pmv to STT in August and we're both heavily tattooed. We spent some time down in the carribean parts of Mexico last year and I was worried we would be frowned upon, to my surprise we were stopped and told how beautiful our "paint" was. My question is are there prejudices there towards heavily tattooed men and women as there can often be mainland?

Thank you all again for your time.

Best regards,

I'm on STX and work in restaurants. I've done high end and low end. I also have tattooed hands and neck. It's never been an issue and most people like them. A lot of people here, especially younger Crusians, have highly visible tattoos.

Depending on what kind of work you do, you may find it hard to obtain some positions working with the public if you have body art you can't cover up. But in general, most folks here are pretty tolerant (as in, live and let live) of other folks, no matter what color (real or inked) their skin is.

A few years ago I housed a nice young couple with a baby. He was a tattoo artist and got a job with one of the local shops. He had a hard time getting rides on safaris some days. They were looked down upon when trying to rent an apartment. They went all the way over to Water Island to rent a house, and although telling them over the phone there was a small child, were turned down because of the child, after the owner looked at them. He wore long sleeves and they both removed their visible piercings. Eventually they went back to CA. That may have been 5-6 years ago. As some said above, you see more these days. Not sure of all business hiring policies though.

Where you will have issues is the higher end resorts which cater to an older, more conservative clientele. Otherwise, unless you have tats that are offensive, you'll probably be ok. IMO

I love Tattoo Tuesdays at Suicide Girls. True works of art! Maybe STX would be a better choice.

Hi Painted lady
I must admit that I am "put off" by tattoos. Maybe it is an age thing or working in a prison, but I see tattoos as an impulsive weakness..If I were an employer and had two equally qualified job seekers I would choose the one without the tattoos.

I have several friends with major ink, but I have needed to overcome my negative feeling to get past the damage they have done to their bodies. I can understand a cute heart tattoo on your butt, but covering your body with ink is ugly to me.

Covering your body in ink is as bad to me as being too religious. Is their anyone I haven't offended today?

Just to let you know , some people do not appreciate your body art. However, I will defend your right to do deface your body in this way.

Wow, that's a lot of ignorance. Why even offer that opinion up? "Deface your body"? WTF does that even mean?

Do you know what the difference between people with tattoos and without tattoos? People with them don't care that you don't have them.

You don't get tattooed for other people, even if they're visible.

I defaced my arm with a geometric representation of a math sequence (Fibonacci sequence), a Latin saying (Scientia Potentia Est) and an English word (Iconoclast) as well as my first daughter’s name.

I agree with Jamison, none of those were for anyone but me; I doubt very many people even know what they are / mean.

Why offer the opinion? Maybe because that's what the OP is after and this IS a forum? Not sure why the confusion about the word "deface" ...

People here are pretty relaxed about alternative lifestyles in general but of course you'll find some people looking you up and down and one of them would likely be me as I wonder why you'd adorn yourself so permanently. And (regrets if my opinion upsets someone) there's something very sad about old, faded tattoos clinging to aging, drooping and wrinkled skin. That's one thing which always crosses my mind when I see all that lovely young skin painted up. 😀 As has been mentioned, finding a job in some areas might be tricky; finding a place to live might be likewise. But no raging mob is going to be chasing you down the streets ... !!

I love my tats, but I also keep them where they can be covered. Part of that is I keep in military standards. But also later after I retire from mil service I can get a civil job without worry. Should it be an issue? Nope. But the reality is that it is in many places and jobs.

I would like to thank you all for sharing information, as WELL as YOUR OPINION. I am not offended by the statements above they actually kinda make me laugh a lil' bit (in a good way).I respect and understand that body modification isn't for everyone however it was my choice and my choice alone to decorate my "house."
As for when I'm older and yes wrinkled, it is my hope/wish that people will have looked past my hard earned wrinkley tattooed skin and be inspired. I'm active member in my community, board member of a nationwide animal welfare program, I even from my own out of pocket expenses planted a garden to help feed my block.
I can promise to you that when im say 60,70 and 80 (pray to God that I can live that long or longer) that I will most certianly not be thinking of my tattoos. Instead my thoughts will be as they are now, did I give more than take, love unconditionally, was I honest and true in my actions, did i live purely.... jeez the list goes on but you get my point. Im far from perfect nor do I strive to be but I will tell you this, my tattoos have opened doorways for myself and others just thru simple conversation. If my painted canvas can help to inspire others to come together and help in whatever way it may be...... so now answer me this..... why would I EVER REGRET???

Thankyou all again for expressing your opinions and sharing, I am looking forward to my visit to the usvi and hope that I can one day meet some of you!!

~best regards

Both of my managers at the fine dining restaurant where I work are pretty well-tattooed. I see so many people with tattoos here, that there are many times I feel like the minority without them. I, personally, am not fond of pain, and haven't encountered any reason to induce me to deliberately cause myself such. Could care less what you want to do to your skin, though.

If you're judging somebody else for the way they look, you should try looking inward. Just my opinion of course.
