Tattoos and piercings

Was wondering how welcome people are with tats and piercings. Are they looked over regardless of qualifications for a job position? Is "appearance" a huge deal in such a laid back place? Are tats and piercings "common"?

If anyone can give me an opinion or actual experiences would be appreciated. We are moving down in a few months and my wife and I are both tattooed and I have a visible piercing. We both are "workaholics" and currently working 40hrs a week and going to school and would like to continue the same program down there. Since we are both working towards our careers[in school] we don't need anything high paying in the meantime. Basically was needing to know if it will be difficult to find average paying jobs with our choice's in life styles.

Thank you
Nathan

I would say that generally the locals aren't into it much but as far as employment goes it's pretty much the same as anywhere else - some bosses may not mind it and to others it may be a big deterrent to hiring you. Have you done a PMV or are you coming cold?

Hey OldTart , Been doing a lot of research for months now on-line. Things sure have changed in a lot of ways in 15 years.
Yes, technically we would be coming cold. This site and posters have helped a bunch and might have a place waiting on our arrival. We will be booking a hotel for a week or two just in case the places we already have set aside aren't really practical.

Some of the younger locals are into tattoos & piercings(minor).
Many transplants from the states are into tattoos & piercings. I've seem a few bartenders in Red Hook tatted up & pierced.
It's usually the older locals that frown against it.

I've seen it quite a bit on stx and doesn't seem to be much of an issue - but as OldTart mentions, definitely depends up on your profession, your Boss, and what group you hang out with - there are a lot of younger tattooed and pierced people here, but it's like many places. I'm from Austin, which is very tattoo friendly, but there still are places where you get the stink eye - same here.

Very understandable, and good to know since STX is where we would be living. As far as certain crowds, we don't really party, but we do enjoy having a healthy social life [volunteering, and the occasional social gathering] where ever we live. My idea of a good time is spending time in my green house tending my plants listening to Yo-Yo Ma on the speakers. Probably the last thing you would expect from first glance.

p.s. I love Austin.

Whatever happened to the old adage "one tattoo is a drunken mistake, two is pathologic"? 😛

Showing my age, I suppose.

My personal feelings about tattoos aside, yeah, what the other posters have said. Doesn't seem to be viewed as negatively these days, but if you're in a professional field you may be asked to wear clothing which hides them. Probably the same situation in the States.

Moderation.....one okay .....full arm , body a big distraction for most people.Kinda like smokers.I hired you with two arms...not one.I don't hire smokers anymore cause they are always trying to work with one hand or lookin for the smoke break..Piercings .??........then I start to question your sanity...!!:D

Thank you for the opinions. Good to know the islands are not still stuck in the 50's. Yes, times have changed and here in the states if you are younger than 60 you are most likely to have one. As far as my piercing goes it is a labret, and have a 6 gage loop in my lip.

As for my "career" I have one that I am working on right now. Agricultural science, getting my masters. Plants don't seem to judge me by the way I choose to look so that is a huge plus.8-)

as far as the smoke breaks, by law for every 4 hours of work an employee is entitled to either a ten or fifteen minute break during that 4 hour period. so that really should not be an issue

i lived in Austin for 10 years before moving here and nary a once saw someone give my tat or anyone else's the stink eye. seems like it was more strange to see someone without one there lol. haven't noticed a shortage of tats or bad looks from people in stx thus far.

@shibuya - head out to the Westlake/Lakeway area. Lots of tattoo stink eyes out there. 🙂 I used to work in that area.

I worked out in Lakeway too, but did not have that same experience. I did avoid Westlake like the plague though lol.

I remember being in the grocery store in Austin once - a little boy of about two ran up to me and pointed at the frog on my leg, saying "Mommy, frog! Frog!" She looked at me, she looked at my leg, her eyes got WIDE, and she dragged him away by the arm without so much as a word to me. He had no idea what he did wrong. (td)

OHmigosh don't get me started on Torchy's! Never was much of a Chuy's fan though. But every time I go to visit the fam I have to hit Maudie's...and some local places...and some places downtown...okay, lots of places! *laughs*

Sad, her kid sounds cool but he will probably end up ruined by his uptight mother.
