I'm in NYC, and likely transitioning into a job that will allow me to work from anywhere in the world, so long as I have a good Internet connection. My compensation will be comparable to what I get now. I'm married and have a preschool aged child. I'm curious about the USVI as an option. My main questions are regarding the Internet connection options and education options for kids. Any advice?

I have not arrived on the island yet

but from what I have read on this board, education is not the star highlight of the USVI, nor is the internet connection. I doubt it will be as reliable as we are use to here on the mainland, but I am prepare to deal with that as a price for all the other pluses.

Cheers

Hello there Robert! Although a pshchotherapist, I have spent a good deal of time in and around education. Although I do not know the other islands well, I think I can speak regarding STX regarding the two questions you have posed.

The first, in terms of high speed Internet connection, there are several options. I am on one of them now through the Innovative phone company. It does allow people to telecomute, as I have known people who do just that. There is also the potential or option of getting your own satelite dish. This would be even a faster connection. Although on some of the older threads, you will read about the phone being out along with electricity, this has not happened for a long time and when it has, has generally been for less than twenty minutes.

Regarding school, there are a couple of good private schools, the Country Day school and the Good Hope school. I have spoken with the headmasters of each, and their curriculum would seem to set their students up well for a broad range of educational experience, and later on, for entry into most colleges or universities. There is also a Montessori (SP?) school, which I do not know personally here, however have participated in in other states. That would be the most diverse of the educations available, however the Montessori method is not for all children or parents. It is less ecclectic and based on one school of educational theory and practice.

I hope this is helpful. Please feel free to contact me with any other questions you might have on the board or by PM. The fastest response would be to send me an Email at Affiliationllc@aol.com.

Best wishes,

Dan

Dear Josh,

If you haven't already done so, your first stop should be at the announcement at the top of this page which relates to new members/posters. You'll find a wealth of information there to keep you busy reading for a while. There have been numerous threads on this forum relating to internet options and education and if you search for those, they too will keep you busy and give you all the information you need to make a qualified decision.

Hope this helps and good luck!
