Below is an excerpt from yesterday's Daily News article.
"$7 million for a new police fleet of approximately 161 new police vehicles and related equipment, which are necessary to comply with a collective bargaining agreement."
I thought we were in tough times. Obviously that has no bearing on the police department .... with acquisitions NOT dictated by need, but by the union. Something seems very wrong here.

I think what seems wrong is the union has to force the government to supply the officers what they need to do the job safely.
If they are willing to put their lives on the line, the least everyone can do is supply them with what they need.

got to remember that there is a substancial charge necessary to extra tint the windows for their comfort and also to block their viewing their use of cell phones....

Police are authorized to use cell phones because the radio in the car can be monitored by the bad guys!

Tint isn't that expensive and if you had to sit for extended periods of time in a car in the sun you'de be needing the tint as well.

they do not need to have their police fleet replenished as often as they do.
The money could be better spent hiring more officers.

Maybe if police vehicles were not used as personel vehicles they would last longer.

The truly ironic part is they are financing these SUV's with a two year life span on a thirty year bond. Two years ago they had to get a loan from Banco Popular. If the equipment is to be replaced every two years than it should be budgeted. Buy half every year and pay for the cars. Thirty years of interest really? Also the replacement is heavy handed lots of these vehicles can and should have there service life extended. I am sure the union contract was a reaction to a situation were in the past the government wouldn't replace the vehicles but even in our harsh environment 24 months or 80,000 miles seems extreme. Last time, as a cost "saving" measure a lot of them were repaired and handed off to other goernment agencies for use. Donm't get me strated on all the cars that the government owns let alone the fleet available to the Senators.
