Looking for a quality upholstery shop anywhere on STT. We are building pallet furniture for our new house and are trying to find the best place to have cushions made. Someone recommended the shop in Smith Bay but I have not contacted them yet. Any advice/experiences with this kind of thing? Thanks in advance for any help!!!

The ladies at The Fabric Store in town can refer you to some. There's also one near CAHS that my ex boss used. I'd have to go by there to get the name.

I'm nterested to hear about this as most people charge more than purcasing an entirely new set of furniture.

Most of the new furniture is a lesser quality than the old. Those that are reupholstering have solid wood furniture that is hard to find now in the VI furniture stores. And, they want to choose fabrics that match their color scheme.

I think there was a thread years ago on a similar if not same topic, and the OP posted the outcome. I don't think they used the word upholstery, but maybe cushions or pillows or something else. I think the OP was somebody from St Croix who was coming over.

Where's the moderator????? He/she should be able to find that thread.

We just finished having a FANTASTIC woman reupholster basically our whole house, and I could not possibly recommend her more highly. Very high quality work at very reasonable prices. You don't even have to leave your house. Her name is Sylvie, you can pm me if you'd like me to ask her to contact you.

Be careful with pallets from outdoors. I built a sink base of pallet wood not long ago. Some of it had termites. Painting it would help as it is usually untreated wood. Maybe if you are making the furniture, you could find some existing cusions and stuff, and build the furniture to fit.

Pallet wood is also soaked in some pretty nasty chemicals.

Well, Alana33, you were correct. We got a quote from Resurrection Upholstery in Smith Bay and the guy wants $1,600 for four cushions!!!!! Needless to say, if we had an extra $2,000 laying around, we would not have built our own furniture so we surely aren't going to be spending that much on cushions! Sooooooo, who else has ideas for us?! Does anyone know of anyone selling a cheap couch or just cushions??? What about the Reuse Emporium or I heard about another place in Bovoni that sells discounted furniture? I hate to buy a whole couch to just use the cushions but we have a guest coming the 28th and I would assume he would like somewhere to sit, possibly sleep 🙂 Does the thrift shop at the Humane Society ever have items like that? ( I never get a day off to actually go there and check it out) If it comes down to it, does anyone know where I can buy big pieces of foam? I may have to come up with some makeshift cushion for now. Thanks again for any and all help!!!

Humane Society has big pieces of furniture for sale from time to time.
I could kick myself for not getting a really nice couch and love seat they had sometime back.
You have to ask about it as they will put some out but mostly keep big furniture downstairs in a separate room.

Did you check with tht lady, Sylvie that Chris MI mentioned in his above post or check with ladies at the Fabric Store that MS411 mentioned? They may also know about foam or a seamtress. The only other places I know are the sail makers. They do cushions, sell foam, etc, but pricy. Do let me know how it goes, seeing I can't sew worth beans!

There is the place in Bovoni that sells used hotel furniture but can't remember their name.
Maybe someone else will post it.

Re-Use Emporium sells used items in Bovoni, and they have very nice things. There's another guy who used to sell hotel furniture, but I don't remember his name.

Have you checked craigslistvi for furniture? There are some excellent deals on there just about every day and for far less than building pallet furniture and then spending an arm and a leg on having cushions made.

I have seen some of the sofas pics for sale on Craigs List and they look pretty tired to me and still need to be re-upholstered.

I look at the ads every single day and there's a lot of variance in the offerings - and some excellent deals to be had if you're quick off the mark. This from today doesn't look at all shabby - big sectional sofa, chair for $1500 (and most people will take an offer!):

The furniture stores on STT expect you to bargain. I know 2 couples who scored with lower sales tag prices. I don't think the Arab furniture stores are fixed prices stores, so happy haggling!

Neither is their furniture of good quality nor as represented, in my past experiences so I won't purchase from their stores again.
Good luck with that!(td)
