This is 35 violent death in STT this year. Represents 25% year to year increase. VI is already most deadly place in north and Central America. What to do to stop it? Why is gun violence so popular here like nowhere else in Caribbean?

There are many more victims who get shot but survive. They don't get much mention in the news.

Education would be a good start. Teaching conflict resolution from a young age. Having teachers that are good roll models (don't scream or hit). It definitely isn't an overnight solution, but I can't think of anything that would be.

Parents being parents is a start. Not just being baby makers.

Make guns easy to get like they are SUPPOSE to be (this would help to reduce robberies & out-side-the-projects confrontations, which can turn fatal)

TARGETED police patrols... Why do I rarely see police in Williams Delight at night? that's when I hear the gun shots....

How about Grove, when I drop off kids @ Grove I never see police out side "patrolling" Hell they are so clueless that the kids stole heavy equipment, made a paintball field and played paintball with stolen paintball guns a stones throw away from the police structure in grove....

Community out reach programs, the kids in there need to see a clear escape path, right now it's job core I hear most about, that's good but we need more things like that, more opportunities for positive mentor-ship.

Parents being parents is a start. Not just being baby makers.

All government subsidies tied to children should require a "parental test" (psychological, stress response, intellect). If you want more food stamps and more tax breaks for being a parent, you'd have to show your a good parent 😉

That's my solution for that.

In the eighties they tried to cap welfare in the states telling families if they had any more children welfare would pay additional monies to support the children. Everyone screamed racism and genocide and the bill was killed.

It was the white people screaming racism right?

Almost every day (sometimes multiple times a day) I'm reminded about how willingly ignorant the majority of the population is....

Though in the 80's we didn't have instant access to information like we do now.. so maybe I'll toss out a Luddite exception for that period.

Because I believe this is the first toddler who has been killed like this? At least as far as I can recall.
All of them count but this one really is heinous.

On STT no one other than law enforcement is supposed to have guns.

The island is a poster child for Gun Control, where only the criminals have guns and the Police can not enforce the laws on the books.

One thing is certain, STT proves gun control does not work.

It's because it's a child and this will potentially hurt tourism. Who wants to bring their family to paradise when their kid is a potential target?
The criminals killing the criminals can be shrugged off by Mapp and his administration, but when it affects the tourism dollars and his next paid trip, of course he freaks out.

Let me know when you find your little bar graph for the eighties. Maybe because the majority of the population that "works" are white. Then when the economy tanks I'll give you one guess who files for assistance first. I hope you included yourself in that "majority".
Oh. To answer your question, no they were black. Anything else?

The following suggestions emerged so far:
1 better parenting and schooling.
2 employment/education opportunities
3 effective policing of the target areas
4 legalizing marijuana
5 relaxing gun laws
6 modification on wealfare policies

Significant number of shootings are basically due to anger and pride issues.
Guy gets kicked out of the club and gets his gun from the car, minor confrontation on the dance floor leads to shooting. Guy gets shot over $5 unpaid dept.

I guess 1/3 of the shooting are just over minor stuff. Not related to gang wars or dealing drugs.

Almost all the shootings happen on the south side of STT around Downtown area. Not much happening on the north side or even Red Hook. If we had more proactive and present police force in these areas that could help. Unfortunately all policing here is reactive. They show up to do the body count.

That is what I see a lot of. That is why I suggested conflict resolution taught from a young age in schools. I've seen and heard of too many cases where something so simple turned into something very violent or even deadly.

BVI has almost none of gun/gang related homicide. They have very strict gun laws. BVI is just a few miles away from STT and STJ. People commute to work between all three islands. Culturally this is the same population of slave trade descendants as USVI is. I view it as a sister islands to USVI. Sure some of the stoic British culture filters down to local population but what puzzles me why BVI doesn't cope with the same issues of violence we do. They still have their share of baby mamas, public schooling, wealfare and unemployment.

Um,.....please reference the above chart with the following information. Like Mark Twain once said,..."There are lies,....DAMNED lies,....and statistics.

Non-Hispanic whites make up 63 percent of the U.S.; Hispanics, 17 percent; blacks, 12.3 percent; Asians, 5 percent; and multiracial Americans, 2.4 percent. About 353 of the nation's 3,143 counties, or 11 percent, are now "majority-minority."Jun 13, 2013

Right. So you suggest that strong enforcement keeps population at check. Perhaps the community in BVI would not put up with gun violence and any perpetrator would be given up to authorities.

This is not the case in USVI. The local community seems to be silent. The code of silence rules. Snitches get stitches. I am sure the community knows who and why. I am sure the police knows who and why. If no witeness steps forward than no arrests can be made. The law can not be enforced.

I guess the black/WE community has to form partnership with law enforcement to stand up to violence. We need effective law enforcement but we also need community that will stand up for its rights..
