What is it with the rank hatred of the public by those in power?

i personally think its wrong to list names and wages. they can list wages with the position and number of years employee has been in that position. why do they have to list names. seems like such an invasion. there is a reason why wages are not to be discussed by anyone in most companies.

of course there are positions in which , even if names were not listed, people would know who was who

I disagree. Government employees are paid by the people via their taxes and the public has every right to know where their tax dollars are going. The same is true anywhere under the US flag.

Because they are public servants if they work for VI Government and our tax dollars pay their salaries. Don't want your name listed, work in private sector.

Here's a good one that I heard yesterday.
Mapp has an administrative assistant now on payroll who is a nurse and she's gets paid with our tax dollars an amount of $50 -55,000 per year to take care of his mother. Mapp has many relatives (think I heard a number close to 40 plus) on payroll who are making great salaries while not being qualified for the positions given.
Yes, I realize this is hardly surprising for someone who kept spouting about our dire financial straits and transparency in his administration.

I worked in a city for 20 yrs just doing my job, then surprise one day my name and salary pops up in the local paper. Shocked because other guys who were senior to me were not listed in this article and they made more money than me. That information is public knowledge and should be available at anytime, just part of the package for a public employee.

I also agree that there should be transparency with government workers. Like Alana said.... we are basically their bosses, we should know who our employees are and what we are paying them. And we should give them $hit if unqualified people are being hired and they are being overpaid. There is a total lack of accountability in the VI government that we need to change. I don't know how we attract any moral people to work in such a corrupt system. I personally can't work in a business that is filled with slime balls. It's just too much for my conscious to take.

Of course we have a right to know salaries but do you really need to know the names of low level employees? Like the name of the maintenance guy whos making less than 25,000 a year?

I have no problem having higher level employees being listed.

Im glad I dont work for the government here. Lol

I don't see why the names of lower level employees should be published either. Seems like the number of positions and salary range would be enough. But not sure where one would draw the line. In PA, everybody's name and salary is published. I worked for them through a contracting company, so I was spared.

It's one thing to have it public, where you can go look it up. It's another to advertise the salary of every employee of the largest employer. It's in bad taste.

Furthermore, many of these salaries are not coming from our taxes. Many come from federal grants that these agencies/individuals had successfully obtained. It's a shame they don't specify whether those salaries are from the general fund, federal funding, or elsewhere.

I think that government employees' names, positions and salaries are normally public record. If not, it would be an EXCELLENT way to hide corruption, like giving your friends and family no-show jobs or inflated salaries, without the public being any the wiser.

Assuming that's true, it would provide even MORE of a reason to make them public.

The "let's publicize the salaries but redact the names" argument is also unpersuasive. All government spending should be open to public scrutiny. How long before gov't agencies start redacting sections of their budgets? $10k for [REDACTED] Road; $5k in supplies for [REDACTED] office, etc.?

How is it that the leader of a public body has made public statements against releasing obviously public information? Heads would have already rolled had this occurred in the context of a state government on the mainland. This is an embarrassing gaffe.

Basically, they are our employees and we need to know names and salaries of those employed.

I'd like to see the what total number of people employed by the VI Government, from the top, right down.

It's unlikely that such change will come in the Mapp administration, as he has already shown that he likes to edit/redact information he sends out (receipt debacle).

There are several agencies that don't reveal. Isn't UVI one? WICO? WAPA?

Regardless of her salary, has she brought new businesses to the territory? She didn't give her report at the DRI meeting. Some local isps are using the network, but that's not new revenue. If she's bringing in new businesses those revenues could justify her salary and staff. Does the government subsidize them if their revenues don't cover expenses? There's so much we don't know.

What good does the salary reveal do for the territory? It helps the paper sell more copies. Even publishing the spending has had little impact that we know of. I would prefer to see more analysis and trends instead of just raw figures. But that'll never happen.

And then there's the Casino Commision. It should be merged with the lottery Commision , oh well at least we have a middle class of Gov't employees.
