Just tested and I received 1.49 down and .09 up. Is that a significant speed increase for BBVI? Don't think so…

Hasn't resulted in lower costs for residential use nor increased speeds that I can tell.

It did result in lower cost for government agencies. Hopefully soon residents will see the savings and increase in speeds.

I don't see how it will result in lower costs. The providers lost all of the government revenue and they have to recoup it somehow. Just like gas stations, as long as they don't undercut their competitors, the lack of competition will keep prices as they are. The opportunity to lower private end users prices passed a long time ago.

VINGN is prohibited by its charter from selling directly to the public, they are however reselling bandwidth to Innovative, BBVI, Smartnet, and other startup ISPs that are beginning to come online which in turn are selling to the public. BBVI for instance is selling 25 meg connections for $199.00/month. There are location limitations at the moment but I know that there is a plan in the works that should help. Currently businesses are the only ones that ISPs are selling to. I know that STX based Orbitel has plans for the future to bring fiber access to residental but it isn't ready yet.

To my knowledge, the various gov't. departments & agencies, while being connected by/through VINGN, actually purchase their internet services from the ISPs.

Innovative is charging $399.00 for a 12 meg connection so 1/2 the price for twice the speed isn't expensive at all for here in a way.

Vicanuck, there is a big difference and not semantics. VINGN came about because of different programs when the economy took a dump in 2007-2008. The local government got roughly 90 million to create a updated high-speed net pipe. When it came about it was also supposed to be that govt agencies were going to get their internet access for free ( it has changed a lot so don't know if it is still that way).

I was contacted by VINGN Friday and asked to speak with a rep Tuesday about a 50mbps connection for $299/mo, and I'm definitely not an ISP, business downtown CA.

Has their federal oversight period passed? I think they are now allowed to take private clients.

Don't never have heard of VINGN selling to public and didn't the no direct sales to public clause had expiration date. It could be usual gov't BS doing stuff they aren't supposed to...

Nope, it was an ISP. When I talked to their rep on the phone he said VINGN but they're another ISP reselling.

I ran into the VP of VINGN at a jobsite today and he confirmed that they will never be able to sell directly to the public as it was in their creation charter that they could not as it would create unfair competition to the ISPs. I guess it was also a condition of getting the money from the federal government.
