Per Wapas page:

STX: 4/18/15 - At approximately 4:50am, the Estate Richmond Power Plant experienced a heavy surge causing all online generating units to trip offline. This resulted in an island-wide service interruption. Plant personnel are currently conducting inspections in an effort to restart the units and begin restoration to feeders. Updates will be posted. We apologize for the inconvenience.

In other words they have no clue and don't worry about Hugo and his $350,000.00 pay for continuing to not have a clue and continuing with inferior machines. All hail King Hugo (barf)

From WAPA's About page on Facebook.

"The VI Water and Power Authority, provides safe, dependable, adequate and economical electrical and water service to customers across the territory."

Hour old update. Past the hour projection. Don't let your ice melt yet.

STX: 4/18/15:10:30am – Heavy surge at power plant resulted in an island-wide service interruption early this morning. Plant is working to restart generators and restore service to feeders - projected within the next hour. We apologize for the inconvenience.

I find it so fascinating the amount that people complain about WAPA and the electrical outages. We live on a tropical island and that's just par for the course no matter the island. I understand it's frustrating at times but living on a tropical island does come at a cost.

Sit back and enjoy the day free from worries! 🙂

I would be willing to pay 5 times less for electrical service that is 10 times better, yet I choose to live in the USVI!

Guess what?
Cayman Islands haven't had an electrical outage in 3 years.
The " what do expect when you live on an island" doesn't cut it, anymore.

The question should be "what do you expect when you live on an island that is allowed to be grossly mismanaged, ineffective and inefficient by its government and the population that elects its (so called) leaders.

Power outages are common on many Caribbean islands. Jamaica for sure is WORSE than WAPA. it is an inconvenience but I do not need power at the beach, which is where I'm heading now. 😎

No power is fine for vacationers and retirees.
WAPA has been sucking dry our economy with insane rates, outages and equipment damaging surges.
With a monopoly fiercely defended (tried to get a solar permit lately?) comes responsibility. Accountability is what we need, not excuses.
WAPA if you are reading this: how about a complete explanation at what happened in this incident ("heavy surge" is not enough), what steps were taken to fix it and how long each step took, and what will be done to avoid repeating such a problem happening again.
Wait. Isn't that the job of Public Services Commission? Or the Press?

What? Do you think that they are accountable to you? You are just a customer of a power monopoly. You don't like it? Make your own power.

Total crap! We lived on Bequia in a 3rd world country for nearly 3 years and had ONE (1) unplanned power outage. We experienced a number of outages over the years but they were advertised in the local paper when the power would be shut off and the expected time it was to be turned on.

It is NOT common to the other islands to have the power outage, surges, etc. that you experience on STX.

So can all those that don't have power now and no generator have your address to send a bill or drop off in your yard all the spoiled food that is soon to come as well as thousands in loss of electronics etc. due to surges when coming up and going down. Between being raped by WAPA daily and no accountability from King Hugo yes we (islanders) do not deserve a single outage anytime due to incompetence.

All of these comments just make me laugh harder. The stress in my life is very low because I don't stress over things I can't control. Attacking me for having the audacity to suggest that living life with a little less stress is....I don't know but it's not good for your stress level.

Here are some suggestions for those worried about spoiled food.

Don't open your refrigerator or freezer during a power outage and the food will keep longer.
If you have the means then please get a generator
If you have some expensive foods you don't want to lose during a prolonged outage buy some ice and put those things in a cooler with ice.

Here are some suggestions to safeguard your precious electronics from power surges while these are not foolproof they will greatly reduce the risk

Unplug all electronics during a power outage and do not plug back in until the power is restored and stable.
Use quality surge protectors to plug your electronics into. DO NOT buy the cheapest ones at the store as those will not do. Your electronics are important to you so you should spend the extra money to protect them.

Please note that sometimes mechanical and electrical systems will fail at your local utility company. This can be distressing to some when faced with life without power or city water(at least you don't have to worry about that here). It is important to remain calm and know that our fellow islanders that work for this utility company are doing their best to restore our services.

If you find this inconvenience to be too much to handle there are some options. You could get a degree and the right amount of training and experience to apply for a job at said utility to help them function at an efficiency level that is up to your standards. You may be able to work your way through the ranks and be the president of said company one day. Another option is to run for public office where you can affect change to make this company the finest in all the land.

Please take this as very light hearted and in jest. I'm not trying to start any arguments over something that everyone was aware of before they moved here or knew since they were small children. This is not a new occurrence on our island. Be happy you live somewhere where it's summer all year long and you can watch an amazing sunrise or sunset on the ocean almost everyday.

From what I hear, the generator at JFL Hospital is out. The hospital is without power.

They should just chill out and send everyone home.

Or maybe we can all gang up on the hospital's generator mechanic or even the manufacturer of said generator. It's obviously their fault that a piece of mechanical equipment failed. Hyperbole is fun but even more fun when paired with sarcasm!

Even though I have no control over the hospital not having power it stresses me out a bit.

Two things I have heard today. First there was an explosion inside Wapa. Second, the island will be without power for days. I hope that neither of those things are true.

For the patients in the hospital, that is HORRIBLE news. Some may be on electricity powered mechanical ventilators. They have built in batteries but they are only good for an hour,...if you're lucky. Having the hospital's generator not working,...again,...is totally unacceptable!

I heard they are having to get WAPA staff from STT to assist, which partially explains why it's taking so long. -_-

It's happened here in STT and STJ when a car took out a wapa pole on the southside of STT. 3 islands (include WI) were without power due to that incident for 3-4 days. How does one pole being downed manage to affect power on 3 islands? That was just one instance when an island wide outage occurred. There have been others. Too many.

We have more outages in recent history than ever before in all my years here.

Not arguing with you Tommystx.
Yes, power outages are a way of life here but that doesn't mean that they should be nor that we should tolerate ridiculously poor service while paying thru the nose for the displeasure.

Those of you going to the beach better hope the water is safe to swim in! You won't know until they issue the advisory next week, for this week, however.
