Water Rates on STX - what are you paying?

hi everyone

My condo complex on STX has recently raised the water rate from .05 per gallon to .07 per gallon and the readings have been really high. My bill this month is for $128!!!!!

I wanted to find out from other STX condo dwellers what rate they are paying on their bills? Or if the rate isn't shown, what are their average monthly bills?

I know water usage varies greatly, but I just wanted to get a general feel to see if I'm getting ripped off, which I suspect I am. But, maybe I'll find out I'm not!

thanks, all!
Joan

Wapa only charges the condo complexes something like $24.48 per 1,000 gallons...so they are paying 2.4 cents per gallon and charging you 7 cents?? Yikes, it sure sounds like you may be getting reamed on that deal!

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking! I wish someone would post with the rate they pay where they're living!

I would think as a condo owner you are entitled to that information from the regulating agency.

I don't own, I rent. Where I live, the water and electric are added to my monthly rent bill.

You do have your own unit meters for electric and water, right?

Yes, each unit has its own water and electric meter, but the readings are not done by the renters, they are either done by WAPA or the condo manager's staff and then the charges are added to our rent bill.

I just want to know, for those who rent their condos, what rate they are being charged for their water usage.

I read somewhere on the board (cannot remember the posting) that one condo charges .04 per gallon. But I am being charged .07 per gallon. So I was interested in finding out what the various condos charge their tenants.

You should name your condo and find out if anyone else is having trouble with their water bill as well. A very large percentage of most condos are renters here, so you may not be alone in your troubles. Do you rent directly from the condos or through a property manager/realtor? Its mostly like a mistake but I wouldnt put anything past some of the condo boards we have on island.

You might use the site I put on this page, it helps estimate your water usage. If you use, say, 30 gallons a day you would pay X.07 . and come up with $63 a month. Hope this helps.

Ms. Info-

Thanks for the link! Looks like we use about 87.24 gallons per day!

coral princess condos charge 6 cents per gallon, but toilet flushing water is free, because it used to be a seawater system, that wasn't tied into the individual meters when it was changed to fresh water flush.
even though the charge is high, the total of all the billing doesn't fully offset the charges paid to WAPA for the entire complex. Some of the excess usage is for keeping the swimming pool full and other usages of a maintenance nature. We are trying to get a better handle on the usage, and make better use of our cisterns.
i've recommended that we measure the flushing water along with the other individual usage, but no one else thinks it is a good idea. as you know a running toilet can use a lot of water, so it would be good to get accountability for wastage.

hey, thanks GeoffMichelle!
This is excactly what I was looking for - what other condos are charging. If you pay 6 cents per gallon, I guess our 7 cents per gallon isn't too far out of line. (I'm at Ocean Terrace) It would be interesting to see what the other condos charge.

I've seen them anywhere from 2.5 cents up to 7 cents per gallon from complex to complex. A few don't charge a metering fee for water (St. C's, Caribbean View and Carlton Condos are examples) and the owners and tenants are blessed!

Interesting. Most condos on STT don't have access to city water.

The Reef charges $0.04 per gallon for water from the RO plant plus an additional $0.025 per gallon for sewage. The average daily consumption per person (not unit) is 50 gallons daily. Most units at the Reef have built in laundry facilities and dishwashers.

In comparing rates between complexes you need to know how the expense of running the sewage system is allocated between units. Is it charged per gallon or is it just built into the budget? Also as someone mentioned how is the cost of water used in public areas covered.

Jim
