where do I stay while looking for a seasonal job?

i want to work a seasonal job starting in november when the tourist season begins (bar tending, hospitality, anything that would allow me to spend a couple of months on the island). i thought i would just show up in november, stay in a hostel, and begin searching for a job and see what happens from there. however, theres a 1 problem with my plan: i cannot find any hostels or budget motels for less than $100 a night. i cant pay that much per night while i look for a job. if it takes me a week to find something ive already built a debt of $700 before ive got a job. i only want to stay for 2-3 months, i probably wont even make $700 in those months.

can someone please tell me what seasonal workers normally do when they want to just show up to the island and look for some temp hospitality job??? i dont believe that every first time seasonal worker pays $100 per night while job searching. please help!!

Ryan

I lucked out and found an apartment ahead of time. But its a risky venture because it will be sight unseen. So ask yourself, would you rather pay 700 for a week of full furnishing in a hotel or 700 for a month of a apartment that may not be quite as glamorous? Choice was easy for me.

We had money saved and someone who could let us stay with her and borrow a vehicle while we found jobs and a car of our own. And, really, that's what most seasonal workers do.

Hi there!
If you want to try out St. Croix, I have a small, efficiency apartment available for 3 months. Opens up Nov. 1, so good timing. You can check out pictures, etc. at http://www.virginislandsrentals.com . Just click on Efficiency, at the top of the page.

For 3 months, $750 per month, including free Dish TV and wireless Internet. Electric and water extra, but already on. Laundry on property, plenty of parking, nice residential area.

Fully furnished and equipped for turn-key ready move in.

We are about 3 miles west of Christiansted, where most of the jobs will be, so we highly recommend having a car. Had you given any thought to transportation?

Let me know if we can help...:-)

Most seasonal workers that I have met have come with friends or found a roommate...
There are some camp-grounds and/or camping beaches too 🙂

I would say go to STT unless you are traveling with a group of friends to STX. STX is very low key and the job market is down. You won't make it without a solid plan/money/friends/transportation. Be careful of renting apartments that you haven't seen or seems to high. Efficiency apartments shouldn't be no more than $500 per month, let's face it, it's only one room. 🙂

Honestly, I think you're going to have a tough time finding a job being brand new on STX. Not that it can't happen -- it certainly can -- but the job market in STX is terrible right now and there is a lot of competition for jobs. Many people that have lived onisland for years -- and are more established than you with better connections than you -- are having trouble finding a job themselves.

Like other said, STT is your best chance.

The VI isn't like most seasonal vacation areas, because tourists come year round, and competition from other Caribbean destinations give vacationers more options than some tourist areas like Martha's Vineyard. There was a time when stores hired for season, but I haven't seen that for maybe 5 years or so.

Island economies can't sustain the hostel lifestyle, because the expenses are so high. Even in San Juan with a bigger population, there are very few hostels.

There's a charter yacht EXPO next month, and they're looking for volunteers. Google for the contact info, and plan your trip around those dates. That might be your best bet for securing seasonal employment in the Caribbean.
