It's now been 5 months since I filed my tax return with the IRB and I still don't have my refund. I have been calling the IRB office regularly to check on the status of my return only to be told that someone is working on it. Does anyone know if there's anything else that I can do to obtain information on my return and to find out if they really plan to issue my refund

Contact the Governor's office....They seem to be trying to alleviate problems like this, and may be willing to make some calls for you and apply a little pressure on the IRB, to at least answer your questions.
And then adjust your tax witholdings from your paycheck or if self employed, get a better accountant to adjust quarterly payments, to be sure you have no overpayment next year so you will not have to deal with them again:)
Good luck!!

Believe it or not, things are so much better at IRB than they used to be. In the past, it has taken years, yes, I said YEARS to get your refund. The previous director was worse than useless. Boy, do I have a long, ugly IRB story! Anyway, I got mine in a very timely manner this year. There doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason as to how they disperse refunds. Keep bugging them. Maybe it will get you moved to the head of the line. You know what they say about the squeaky wheel.....

I agree with jay. Try to arrange it so they don't owe you anything, or at least not much.

The IRB has dramatically improved its turnaround time for refunds. I was surprised to receive my 2006 refund a few months after I filed. I'm still waiting for my 2005 refund but if it arrives this year it will still be an improvement over historic IRB refund timetables.

Other than opening an almost 11 yr old post, I will be the first to say it might just take as long as this thread is old for you to ever see it. 😎

Is this your 1st time waiting for a tax refund from the USVI government???
They are not timely about sending out checks, could easily be years from now. Always structure your withholding so you OWE them at tax time!

I have been owed a refund of 17 of the 19 years I've been here. The quickest return check I got was 2 years after the final due date. They all have had interest on them. The longest it took was 6.5 years. Wouldn't hurt to call and make sure there is nothing holding it up. One of my years was in audit and I never got a letter and I didn't find this out until after I called more than two dozen times in an 18 month period. I'm in the STT/STJ district, but I usually get more help when I call the STX district offices. They will send the return to the address on the return. So if you move, you have to file a specific form with the VIBIR to change your address. So make sure you do that if you mailing address changes.

Restructuring your withholding is important -- do it now for your 2018 income.

Sounds like there is a good chance your 2013 is in audit. This is what happened to me for 2010 and I didn't find out until 2015 after more than two dozen calls. They told me they don't give out any refunds for any years until the audit is completed on the earliest year. I finally found out about my 2010 audit by asking about my 2012 refund status. I was recently denied a tax clearance letter for the business because they said I didn't file in 2014. No matter I had a tax clearance letter for 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017. I gave them the stamped copy of the 2014 return, which was filed,on time. They lose things. That stamped copy is super important here.

Waiting for 2013, 14, 15, 16 ,17......No lie.

" They lose things."

This should be inscribed on a monument that newbies can see when they get off the plane. Always hand-deliver important documents and get stamped copies for yourself.

The BIR could also be sending notices to your old address. They did that with me for about 3 years. I put my new address on recent filings, but they were sending delinquent notices to my old address. I owed them $15 or something.

Always structure your withholding so you OWE them at tax time!

And if they still owe you, then don't ask for a refund. Instead, apply it to next year's taxes.

Yes, 2013 is under audit. They requested the same documents 3 times since they keep losing them.

Since my 2010 was under audit, they audited 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015. And I still have to prove the existence of my two children every year. I suppose because they are the reason I'm always due a refund despite adjusting my withholding. I did get two refunds not too long after the storms. Which was a welcome surprise.
