Where's the rain?

So far, we haven’t had to get a water delivery, but the cistern is lower than ever before. We’ve been taking “Navy showers” and conserving what we can for several months now.
Yesterday was a huge letdown considering the weather predictions with a 70% chance of rain. I checked satellite imagery several times and watched it all drift north of us without so much as a sprinkle.
This is the rainy season... right?

National Weather Service/NOAA is showing an increasing probability of a forthcoming El Nino (ENSO). The mid-Pacific is warming.

During El Nino, the Caribbean is dry during the summer and has more rain during the winter months.

ENSO can help scare away hurricanes.

It has been sprinkling and it rained in Charlotte Amalie yesterday. Some people have a backup above ground cistern just in case.

I installed a 300 gallon buffalo tank for the garden. I’ve got a gutter with pvc pipe off my 20’ container that fills it. It’s been bone dry for about a month now.
Deer are getting desperate and munching things in the garden that they normally don’t touch.

They said the east-end of STX was dry, but...

Yesterday we had a few, very brief, passing showers out here. By the time water began trickling into the cistern, the cloud moved away and the rain ended.
Frustrating indeed.

It'll come.
Rainy season usually fall and winter.
Glad to hear Northside, STT getting some.
Hopefully no drought event like a few years ago and no huge rain events/deluges to impact people still living under tarped roofs, our roads and utilities.

Cistern just went dry, best value recommendations on STT for water delivery company, and average price per quantity of water (I have no idea the capacity of this cistern)?

If you have a phone, you can call the various water companies and check prices.

make sure your cistern is not a double one. if that's the case, you should have a switch somewhere to move your intake from one holding tank to the other.

There are cistern water gauges you can buy to monitor usage.

Thanks Gator’s Mom, yes supposedly there’s a second cistern here, still trying to work thru switching over to it (with the help of my Stateside landlord), however the previous tenant may have already switched to it, unknown. Unfortunately, no gauges at this address to let one know when the cistern is almost empty.

You can buy a cistern gauge online or make one from a traditional hand pumped blood pressure cuff. We made ours. Not an expensive gadget but a good one to have.

I use Dadlies when I had cistern cleaned and then when I had to order water the year we had the drought.
Think it was around $360 for 5000 gallons.

If you have access to your cistern cover, your can usually see how much water you have or use a long pole.

Let water in cistern subside a couple of days, pour in some bleach and change the sediment filter. All the stuff on the bottom gets churned up.

Finally... Sweet, sweet, rain on the east end of STX!!!

I was just about to order a truckload of water too. I opened the cistern cover and my wife and I just stood there and stared at all the rushing water for awhile.

I’ve gotten a good 8” already!
(I’m talking about the water level in my cistern of course...)

(tu)(tu)(tu)

From the radar earlier, looks like STT and STJ and BVIs all got tons more than us. They were socked in with the yellow and oranges on the radar for quite some time.

Yup, got a good soak. Good enough the ground got saturated and I got the chance to really see what is up with the rainwater flow through my yard which is in a natural gut. Glad to report everything is flowing the way it should be an not putting any trees in danger. That was a huge issue for us after Irma. All of the debris and downed trees made the water go places it shouldn't.
