Hello everyone, I am new to this forum but have been following it for quite sometime now. I just had a few questions and need help getting steered in the right direction. We have been wanting to move to the islands for a very long time now and feel the time is coming soon... We have been researching for years and trying to find out different info to help us along the way. We own a successful Window Tinting business here on the mainland and we were considering making the move to the USVI and opening the Window Tinting business there. We know everything is different down there and there are many many challenges to deal with. But all in all I was just wondering if there are any other reputable tinting businesses on the islands? How you locals would think a business like that would do there... and any info or tips you all can give us! Thanks so much in advance!
- cheers

there must be window tinting businesses here. there are many illegally tinted car windows. do you only do vehicle tinting or do you offer residential tinting also? is there residential tinting?

There are already window tinting businesses in the VI.
Can't say how many, licensed or not, on any given island nor whether you'd be able to sustain an affordable lifestyle from such a business.

Here's a link to the VI telephone directory:

Thanks for the speedy response "Speedy1" ! Yes we can perfectly tint ANY glass. Residential, Restaurants, Hotels, Yachts, Helicopters / Planes, Tractors, Vehicles etc. Also Hurricane and Security film (extra thick). Also if anyone knows about how much they charge for a vehicle? We have a passion for what we do and work very hard, we always want to do things the right way! Is there any 1 shop that stands out more than others?
Thanks again for all the info and help!

From what I understand window tint on vehicles is illegal. It is in a lot of states and that doesn't stop people from having it installed. You also don't have as many people on island like in the states.

It's not illegal as long as it's not excessive. There are laws in the VI as elsewhere dictating the density of the tint.

In the USVI, vehicle tint "to the extent that visible light transmittance is reduced to less than 35%" is allowed. For details, see http://www.lexisnexis.com/hottopics/vicode/ and search for "tint".

A lot of people violate this law.

a lot of my co workers violate this law. wish i could. hubby had legal amount of tint on windows and the dmv ripped it off as the gentleman reading the tint meter didnt know how to read it.

a true full service tinting service might just be doable down here. the sun is very close here and those with true windows ( unlike us ) might like to get the extra thick tinting on their windows.

when you come down just have plenty of stash money to sustain you until your business is profitable

Thank you everyone for your helpful responses! Full service tinting and quality are the right words. It would be our dream to bring a business like this to the USVI and do things right! Thanks again for the help and have a great day in the tropics!

Best to do a exploratory visit to determine feasibility.
You'll have to determine consumer need plus costs of commercial rental space in a good location, licensing, doing business, shipping materials, taxes, etc. Plus costs of relocating family and setting up a home and a business.

You can check if you'd qualify for EDC benefits.

Good luck.

It sounds like a great business plan. Inspection or the "police" will tear it off for free and you'll get paid to put it back on.

There are many window tinting vendors on STT and STX but most don't appear to be licensed or the service is a sideline of a business.
