Yard sales and auctions are a huge thing in Michigan in the summer.  I find a lot of treasures at them.  Does this activity take place on the islands?

Yes there are sometimes 'yard sales' type occurrences. Mostly there are house sales that people who are leaving island selling tools, furniture, kitchen goods, some clothing, baby products, toys and books.  The treasures are of a different nature and usually more in the useful products type. We don't have homes with massive storage spaces, like garages and attics that get cleaned out and many of the sales are people who moved here with few valued collectibles and don'tgenerally have generations of things packed away and not in general use. most homes are not on easily accessed main roads that have drive by visual presence, but there are always a few tables set up at places like 4 Corners on Northside STT on a  Sat/Sun where you will get more traffic passing.

The Humane Society on STT has a thrift store type building that gets donated items and many older folks who leave island, because of the convenience, drop off more interesting things there than the usual house sales around the island.

having a 'yard sale' here is not as practical as  stateside streets and roads permit, but finding useful items for sale here is well worth the vigilance and of course dumpster finds are always a treat.

Now that is something to ponder.  What I bring to the island with me I will need to have it shipped back to the mainland for only two reasons.  I decide I don't like it there or God calls me home in that case my children will need to decide what to do with my things.  So I wonder if people bring family history with them, ie, furniture, glassware, old pictures, etc?  Until today I never considered how to get the things back off the island.  Again, this forum has been so helpful for me.

There is a reason many people recommend leaving your stuff at home until you are sure you are going to stay. It is expensive to bring down furniture, etc. and then expensive to ship it back. This is why there is so much used stuff here; people tend to leave it when they go. I put my family heirlooms in storage when I left Big America and shipped them down 5 years later. Irma took care of most of them. LOL
