Hello, future island friends! I am considering getting a yoga certification as a backup plan in addition to working in a restaurant/retail space (and doing web design/video editing during the slow season). It is a $4k investment and will eat into my "STT dream fund" so I am hesitant to spend this $$$$ without knowing if I will use it.

I have read that yoga is available at the following locations:

Open Space Studios
Five Element Studio
Prana Spa
Synergy Fitness & Wellness
Extreme Fitness
UVI
Paradise Gate (Havensight)
Jackson Wellness Complex (Antilles School)
Residences Fitness Center @ Yacht Haven Grande
Ritz
Secret Harbour
Emerald Beach
Gold's Gym
Journey Spa @ Sugar Bay
Marriott
Pointe Dance Academy

This list might have some redundancy or maybe no longer available at these locations as I am not familiar with the area. At least from here I can see potential places to teach. Also, what is the laws regarding yoga on the beaches?

I guess I am just reaching out to see if anyone knows about how much yoga instructors make there and the likelihood of being able to break into this market on STT.

Also, contemplating getting established on the island with the savings I have then maybe coming back for the cert program but that will obviously be a bigger cost. Should I go for it and spend this amount hoping I can recoup the costs before I leave? Thoughts??

Thank you in advance for any insight to my quandary. I know sometimes our questions are redundant, lazy, or "how would I know what is right for you?"...but good advice is so valuable before someone blows their savings. 🙂

There's a lady that does yoga on beaches. Can't remember her name.
Why don't you contact the places on your yoga list and see what job options and salaries are prior to spending $$ to get certified and then not being able to use it due to a glut of instructors already on island? Check out the companies here that do web design and video editng and see if there are any job opportunities.

You do need $$$$ to get set up in an apt.(1st, last & security deposits), set up utilies if not included, get a car so you can get back and forth to home, work, shopping, beach, purchase the basic grocery and cleaning supplies, you may have to buy dishware, linens, towels, etc, if apt. not completely and fully furnished. The list goes on and money goes fast.

Thanks FI!! I will add to the list for sure.

Alana, I read your story the minute it posted. Thank u! And you putting a number on the savings really helped me. I am making this leap with a mother going through chemo and a spoiled dog so I need all the help I can get lol.
🙂

I have spent a lot of time in Trini & Tobago, Costa Rica, and Hawaii before falling for USVI. Oh by the way, where is there good roti on STT STX or STJ?? Going to need that stat w a cocktail and sunset when I arrive mid-January.

January is very busy season here in STT. Most jobs in service industry are filled. You may want to rethink arrival to late October/early Nov. if possible to get settled in and find a job prior to "high season" starting which it does around Thanksgiving week. Good Luck whatever you decide.

Yes, there is good Roti on STT and STJ. Can't speak for STX as I live on STT and visit STJ, often.

Hmm yes I was afraid you would say that. Ive heard that a few times from local/residents. Good call.

January is the best time for us but you are right. I dont want to spin my wheels for 9 months. (reevaluating calendar ugh)
Well either break my lease for the first time ever to arrive in September or wait another year.

Just to point out that travel from the islands of STT & STJ to the island of STX is pretty much restricted to seaplane.

Stupid question….why is there no ferries from STT to STX??

You can shoot me now I'm sure I can Google but I want to know from you.

To an ignorant outsider it seems it would be better for everyone. Why is it so?

It crashed a while ago and no investors want to plunk down the money to run another one. Real shame, in my almost ten years living on STT in the 80s I had the opportunity to go to STX via ferry, but only went once for inter-island drag racing one weekend. Really not enough time to even get more than a bare taste of Christiansted.

It was a long, rough ferry ride before. They used to call it the Vomit Comet.

Edit: A strait line is about 40 miles, so at say, 30 mph, that's a good two hours docking, getting on, off, waiting, if it is on time...

Although there are plenty of places to teach yoga in the islands, it's not an easy way to make money. If this is something you are passionate about and would love to have as part of your lifestyle and identity, go for it. But don't expect to recoup that $4,000 investment too quickly as a new teacher and new island resident. An investment in massage school, for example, would take you a lot farther financially.

Thank you! Maybe best to use that money for moving expenses at this time.

Honestly, if all you have in your moving fund is $4K I'd wait another year and build up the kitty more as that $4K is going to be gone in the snap of a finger. Also if your mother's undergoing chemo it would be fare less stressful for her to get that over with first. The islands aren't going anywhere ...

I have $11k now and will keep saving. My mom will have chemo for the rest of her life, unfortunately, with slim chance of remission. In spite of the chemo once a month, she is actually doing well and still very active. She wants to go just as much as I do as the triple digit heat and harsh winters are hard on her here. Her oncologist is on board and will be working with an oncologist there to make sure they are on the same page which will hopefully help.

At this time, we are discussing reconsidering the January move. I have a friend that is coming by this weekend to see our apartment in order to sublet our current lease. If subletting our apartment if successful, we will be coming in September so that we can get settled and I can look for employment in October.
