Am really getting excited now about visiting STT and STJ in just a couple of weeks (1-7 June)...anyone care to share your favorite place, setting, or just lifestyle change for the better that island life has given you, for someone considering the move?

In other words, despite all the challenging issues discussed on this forum (i.e. relatively higher cost of living for most, infrastructure issues, local politics, frustrating bureaucracy at times, environmental conditions, etc.), what's that one thing, or two, that help you reaffirm that "yes, this was the right choice after all!" at the end of the day?

Thanks in advance for sharing and I can appreciate that this may be very personal for some.

Dave

Same here. Even if you see it more on STJ, there really is not a socioeconomic divide like you see in the states. You can be sitting at the Beach Bar and have a mulit-millionaire to your left and a homeless person to your right and everything in-between surrounding you and that would be normal.

Strangers greet one another, they look each other in the eye, they help each other. A strong sense of community.

Rarely feeling cold, seeing and feeling sunshine most of the time. Being close to the water.

Having to figure things out with limited supplies. I am often impressed with peoples ingenuity and creativity when it comes to problem solving when you can't just run to the store and get whatever it is you need to get a job/project done.

Thanks all for sharing your inputs so far, seeing a lot of common threads in the tone...any fave physical locations or panoramic views come to mind that are "must sees" while visiting, particularly off the tourist beat, as I plan to have a rental car for a couple of the days?

On STT there are 2 botanical gardens, Hull Bay Hideaway and beach, St. Peter Greathouse, Magens Bay Beach and it's arboritum. Conch, fungi, plantains for lunch at Petite Pump Room or check out Hook,Line and Sinker in French Town, Also Twisted Cork. Dinner at Oceania.
Mt. Top very commercial but great views. Paradise Pt. Tramway good for sunset cocktails. Smith Bay Beach and Secret Harbor for swimming and snorkeling. Sorry but won't give up the more off the beaten path places or they'll no longer be so. Take a day sail, go kayaking.

On STJ my favorites are Annaberg Ruins, Leinster Bay below, snorkeling Water Lemon Cay, Francis Bay, lunch at Shipwreck Landing and swimming and snorkeling out at Lamesure Bay. There's a hiking trail down to the Petroglyphs and Reef Bay from there. Take good shoes, water, insect repellent, if you do the hike. Too much to do in one day.

Lots of places for live music on STT.
Check out Latitude 18, if you're on the east end of island.

Wanted to thank you again Alanna33 for your very helpful list of activities, was able to do many of them, with my fave the Reef Bay Trail hike on Monday (I prefer the nature activities. After being here for a week and meeting with the nice husband and wife team at Scenic Properties to better understand the local real estate market and cycle, am ready to now make the move to STJ July-Aug timeframe????Thanks again for your generosity with sharing local info, much appreciated.
