I wonder how they know that a third egg is about to be laid. Is it based on how the eagles are acting?

Interestingly, the Bald Eagle usually lays an egg every 2 to 3 days apart and three eggs seems to be the popular number per nest; past studies and observations have also shown this to be the standard pattern of the species. The family usually consists of three kids, the last egg laid being the 'runt of the litter' and hatching almost a week after Egg #1. Liberty and Justice are amazingly dedicated parents. This family will not only entertain viewers, but provide a wonderful education about these glorious birds as you enter the remarkable world of America's National Symbol. Here you will witness the epitome of patience and kindness, love and devotion.

An update from our friends at Alcoa:

Friday, March 11, 2016

....Two It Is

"....It is pretty clear that we will have two eggs in the Alcoa EagleCam nest this year. Unless Liberty and Justice have done a great job of hiding a third egg (not likely) I think we can plan to look for two eggs for the rest of the season. That being the case I would expect to see the hatching begin somewhere around April 7th or 8th. Hopefully they will be successful and have both eggs hatch this year...."

Just a quick update everyone:

Our Alcoa Co. IOWA family - Liberty and Justice - are diligently incubating their two eggs; they are expected to hatch at the very beginning of April. All is fine at the homestead. 🙂

I peeked in on our DC family, Mr. President and the First Lady, who have successfully hatched their two eggs. DC#2 arrived 6 days ago; DC3 arrived 4 days ago. Both kids are well, strong, becoming curious as to their surroundings, have great appetites and look wonderful! Let's hope that they continue on that path in the weeks ahead.....
Please enjoy watching these fascinating families.

Just a note: Should our young 'Ornithology - interested individuals' want an exceptional bird's eye view to an Eagle family raising the eaglets, Mr. President and The First Lady are offering them the opportunity to do so. They seem to be showing off their kids at every opportunity! The kids are not under continuous coverage by the parents, as seen with other families. Then again, maybe they spotted the camera and wish to glow in the spotlight! 😀

The Alcoa -IOWA Eagles Update:

Liberty and Justice have successfully hatched both of their eggs! The first joined the family on Friday, April 8th and the second eaglet hatched this morning Monday, April 11th. "....The hatch started yesterday and was completed early this morning. Hopefully both eaglets with thrive over the next few weeks....."

Washington D.C. Eagles Update:

Mr. President, The First Lady, and the two Eaglets are thriving! The kids are at the toddler stage and are starting to walk around the nest area. They are growing by leaps and bounds, have enormous appetites, and are even beginning to engage in 'nestorations' of their own by moving little sticks and nest material from one place to another.

It's hard to believe that in several months, the babies will be fledging and experiencing the world on their own...

Please enjoy!

Finally I have seen them! I've peeked in at the two eaglets, safely secreted away under the parents for the past week, and am thrilled to note that they are doing exceptionally well. They both look wonderful! Two cottonballs, they are strong, peeking around at the environment, eating like there is no tomorrow, and the cutest characters who will charm you to no end. One is 10 days old; the second is one week old. Enjoy this beautiful family everyone.

G' afternoon our Eagle friends,

"More than 36,000 people voted. The winning names?
'Freedom" & "Liberty.'"

'....These names are quite fitting, considering that eagle parents "Mr. President" and "The First Lady" and their two eaglets reside directly inside the Capital of the United States. Pretty patriotic, right?....'
Please enjoy them; they are growing like weeds! 😀

Good afternoon Eagle friends.
Names for the kids at our friends at Alcoa in IOWA have been selected:

....Say Hello to Star & Sky

"....The voting is over and the two Alcoa EagleCam eaglets for 2016 will now be known by the names Star and Sky. With nearly 5,000 votes almost 30% went to this pair of names. In keeping with our past practice Star will be the first hatch and Sky will be the second hatched...."

I'm pleased that an Eaglet was named "Sky", for it was 'Sky's The Limit' - a member of this VI forum - who first introduced us all to this special Eagle family at Alcoa Davenport Works in Iowa a few years ago. Thank you STL! 😀

"....Eagle parents Liberty and Justice have decided to build a new nest this year! It is close to the old nest and they installed a new upgraded cam that shows the new nest, yay! The new cam also includes night vision, something we haven’t had in the past at this eaglecam, so way cool! The cam we have come to know as the Alcoa Davenport cam is now part of Arconic. On Tuesday, November 1, Alcoa separated into two publicly traded companies. Davenport Works and Arconic. The cam is handled by Arconic...."

On February 14th and 17th, eggs were laid. A possible third egg may be a part of the clan, but it is not certain as yet. The hatchings usually take place toward the end of March.

Brought to us originally by SkiesThe Limit, we can look ahead to another season of watching America's Eagle raise and fledge their young. Thank you, STL!
Enjoy... !

Third Hatch Underway

The third egg in the Arconic EagleCam nest is in the process of hatching. It was clear to see a large opening in the egg and movement during a feeding of the other two eaglets just before 6pm local time. I would expect the youngest one to hatch tonight or in the morning. Pictures below show the opening in the egg, located somewhat between the two eaglets down from center of the photo. :@)

(From Arconic):
And Now We Have Three 😀

It is great to see all three eaglets getting some food this morning. It is clear the hatch happened last night sometime. For my purposes I will consider the hatch at 7pm nest time last night. Here is a shot from a feeding this morning.
