Tried for years to get my husband to walk the little dog away from the trees. It took one denting our car for him to see the light.

Love having an almost infinite supply right outside, now that I know how to get into them without cutting my fingers off.

I have two tree's in my yard that I don't put anything I care bout under... they drop 10lb cocnuts from about 25 feet up... hahah

I have my yard guys remove all the coconuts from trees around the house during hurricane season so they do not become wind driven projectiles.

Ditto we keep them off the trees on the condo grounds during hurricane season and off the ground as well.

Actually, no, I wasn't kidding. And this thread actually offered really great information about how to deal with it if I see it, so thanks for all of it.

I'm born and raised in Los Angeles area, went to Dallas, TX for graduate school, currently work in Murray, KY, and I'm interviewing for a position on St. Croix. I worked on Curacao for a bit just before Sept. 11, but I never saw a coconut tree. I've seen some coconuts in the store when I lived in CA, but I haven't even seen a coconut for a long time.

And reading "10 pounds at 25 feet" puts things in perspective: coconut trees are not to be taken lightly.

Our trees seem to be of a shorter variety. I noticed the ones in Hawaii last month were like 3 stories tall. The tree climbers climb right up with spikes to lop off the cocoanuts and dead palm fronds.

Palms aren't trees. They are just big blades of grass.
The state tree of SC is the Sabal Palmetto.
SC ranks very low in HS graduation rates.
