I think that if we have a problem with nepotism and politics then hiring someone local would only continue the problems. Better to hire someone with no local connections but lots of experience.

They did that and he just quit!!!

It will be interesting if after White is completely out he opens up and talks candidly about what the problems were which caused him to quit.

I don't think White will ever tell the full story. While it would be beneficial to see what the real problems were that he encountered, it would be politicized as sour grapes from an 'outsider', and possibly make it more difficult for other qualified persons to move here and obtain positions.

It 's bad form to crucify a former employer. If white wants to find another job, he probably won't spill ALL the beans. And besides, who would believe him any way? I doubt he was told the full story and given an accurate picture of VI policing and politics during his recruitment process. Maybe he just couldn't compered how unbelievably messed-up the VI system is. If he does stand up, it won't be until the VI meets all the contractual obligations and White and all his family are safely off the off the island.

Corruption & bribe issues?

Take it from someone who knows.

The politics in policing agencies is brutal.

........and we have nothing over on agencies on the mainland with regards to nepotism. In some departments it's a job requirement!

I think Querrard could be a good choice.
Guess we will soon find out how well he can perform in this position.

"Since I am a policy-maker, and I don't have the authority to hire and fire, that ought to answer your question right there," White said. "If I am the top policy-maker and I don't have the power to hire and fire - hello."

Interesting. Then who does have the power to hire and fire within the police dept? Who's calling the shots?

Could it be the Unions? Did he have to go thru the Governor?

One would think that as a Commissioner, he would have the right to hire and fire as he sees fit to get rid of deadwood and bring in competent replacements. It's a sad commentary on our VIPD and VI Government.
Hope Querrard has more success and our VIPD improves.
Illegal guns and those that bring them in, need to be a top priority and need to go.

Wow, sounds like he is almost a figure head... a "fall guy" as it were.

If you are a policy maker with no ability to back up the policy (hire/fire authority) it is going to be nearly impossible to effect any change.

I agree that laws should be enforced & problematic area's addressed (however I disagree with the gun issue, prohibition is a concept for the early 1900's, we have found through statistical analysis and multiple historical examples that it just does not work.)

If you make something illegal then only the law abiding citizens will not have it; our society can't even keep drugs out of prison (what does THAT tell you ??) making personal protection tools illegal just does not work (as I'm sure the Islands have seen by now).

What DOES work (and can be shown via examples in the states) is increased police presence in "high risk" areas; the officers (if they are any good) KNOW the trouble neighborhoods, this is where they should focus their efforts and have a heavy presence, maybe staffing levels need to be looked at as well.

Even though I am a government union member, I think all public unions should be disbanded, the government union relationship does not work well as the bureaucracy of the government does not have sufficient motivation (aka PROFIT) to fight back against union demands.

I've seen it for years as a union member, the only people I have seen benefit are the people that shouldn't be protected.
