I am writing to find out how many more people beside myself have NOT received their 2010 tax refund. Since we are coming up on the 2011 tax season, I am wondering if those people who have not received their 2010 refund, will get paid before they start with the 2011 refunds?? Anybody aware of what is going on with this?

I think you'd be better of asking this on the General/Relocation board.

The VI govt still owes $30 million in refunds. There was a recent (within the past month or so) Daily News article about this, but I don't remember exactly when it was.

In the meantime the VI govt is broke, and firing people to cover payroll. So I don't know when / where they will find the $30 million to pay outstanding 2010 refunds. There has been no communication as to when this will happen.

In my opinion, it is criminal that they aren't paying the refunds. I'm even more concerned about 2011 returns and when they'll have $ for those!

That's when the little check box at the bottom of the return that allows you to apply your tax refund to the following year's tax bill makes sense. And add 20 dependents to your W-4 form so you don't have any taxes deducted in the first place.

It took 2-1/2 years to get my first tax refunds from the USVI for my 2004 and 2005 tax returns. Then they messed up my self-employment tax returns paid directly by me to the IRS and came after me for taxes I'd already paid two to three years previously. Realtors and other self-employed people have to file double tax returns with both the USVI and the IRS (plus gross receipts tax to the USVI in my case as a Realtor) and of course that means the paperwork is always screwed up somewhere with so many different offices involved. Eventually the IRS took money from my First Bank account without warning... and then a year later gave it all back with interest once someone at the federal level audited the USVI self-employment tax returns and realized they'd double dipped on my tax returns as I'd been telling them all along, even showing them copies of tax returns and cleared checks used to pay what they were saying was owed. It was a headache for sure and had me livid for a long time, but eventually it got sorted out. I'll always be careful here not to pay more in during the year than will be owed after all deductions since refunds are so rarely forthcoming in a timely manner... if at all.
