About 100 local and off-island artists have donated over 100 works of art for a charity benefit that will send 100 percent of the money raised to a school in Haiti.

Three years ago, after the devastating earthquake in Haiti, local painter/ceramist Mandy Thody started a non-profit called 100% for Haiti to raise funds for projects in Haiti.

100% for Haiti is now concentrating on one school that was totally destroyed in the quake. A few days after the tragedy, the children at the school were trying to continue their schooling under a leaking tarpaulin with a few desks that had not been burned for firewood. 100% for Haiti organized the construction of a temporary school building from plywood and tin with the seed money they raised the first year from an art sale at Walsh Metal Works Gallery. The school now serves over 250 students between the ages of 3 and 18. 100% for Haiti provides funding for teacher and staff salaries, lunches, first aid, latrines, and clean water at the IMECT (Institution Mixte d’Education Classique de Tapion) School in a rural area near Petit Gouave, employing only local people. No money is used for administration either here in the VI or in the U.S. as all work is done by volunteers. Mandy and her board of directors are now producing this year’s art show and sale to keep that school running, and they hope to eventually provide a permanent building for the school.

The Art Sale will be at Fort Frederik in Frederiksted, April 24-26, 10 AM to 5 PM, with a closing reception on that Friday evening, April 26, from 5-9 PM. Admission to the reception will be $10 with refreshments and entertainment provided. Throughout all three days of the exhibit, the fort will be brimming with art activities. In addition to the show in the big gallery, the courtyard will have demonstrations by painters, sculptors, potters, woodturners, and other artists. During the reception, performance artists will alternate with music and dance.
