VIMSIA UPDATE:@)

VI Montessori School & International Academy not only has a new name but also a new Head of School. Dr. Peter J. Samaranayake a.k.a. Dr. Sam, a long time world-wide educator has taken over as Head of School and will oversee the implementation of the International Baccalaureate Program (IB) which is the first of its kind being offered in the VI territory. Dr. Sam has over 25 years of IB experience and has served in five other IB schools around the world.

Dr. Samaranayake’s predecessor Shournagh McWeeney, who has successfully served as Head of School for the past 28 years will set aside her retirement plans and continue to serve the school as their Montessori Director for pre-K through sixth grade.

The IB Program is a renowned international educational curriculum and assessment program used in over 2,378 schools and 128 countries. The IB program is a natural fit with VI Montessori School since both value the importance of fostering independent learning and developing inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who will help to create a better more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

This coming academic year for fall of 2008, the VI Montessori School and International Academy will offer the IB program for their 7th to 10th grade students. There is a future plan to expand the school for fall of 2009 by offering 11th grade and 12th grade will be offered in the fall of 2010.
