My husband and I am moving late this year early Jan. So I have lots of questions before we make the hop from the big island to the small one!
1. Been on island trader and see a lot of gym advertising? are they all meat head gyms? or nice ones the a woman can feel comfortable at?

2. Anyone have Sprint cellphone service on STT? Called and they said all we have to do is change our area code???

3. what are the big grocery stores on STT? would like to get on line if they have a website?

4. If I get a great job before my husband can move (he is in school until December) I will move by myself, how safe is it walking around at night etc... I see a lot of hotel sites saying not to do this?

5. Brining two cats over, do you think it will be hard to find housing that will allow pets as well?

Thanks so much!!

Sprint works for us here on STT but there are spots where reception is poor. AT&T is the other option but I live on the north side and Sprint works better for me.

The grocery stores here are Cost-U-Less (bulk) , Pricesmart (membership), Plaza Extra, Pueblo, Food Center and some smaller markets that largely cater to the boating crowd. Stocking in the stores here can be spotty and when they run out of something it can often be a long wait until they get around to reordering, have it trucked to a port and then shipped to the islands.

Whether it is safe to walk around at night depends on where you plan to walk but for the most part I would advise against walking around at night alone.

It is harder to find housing with pets but doable.

Hi breelyni,

Plenty of gyms/spas that are women friendly.

Sprint is as good as any. None are perfect. If you have a stateside area code, it's long distance from a land-line. Sprint Customer Service should be able to help you with that.

Grocery store with a website? Not in this century! (well, maybe, since this century is young). If you are thinking of ordering online....don't.

What is your profession? Are you familiar with the island, and do you know in which area you will want to live? There are a few areas OK to walk around, but not too many. Red Hook is probably the safest and most convenient pedestrian neighborhood.

When you say you are moving from the big island....do you mean St. Croix? If so, how long have you been here? Doesn't change anything, just how much info is necessary.

Hey Folks
Plaza Extra DOES have a web site. See Juanita, progress is progressing. Try www.plazaextra.com There are no other grocery chain stores. No Costco, no WalMart, just locals.

We be part of the regular big world.

I like Cingular (ATT), but it depends where you live. It is very different island to island.

When you say "the big island", I assume you are referring to the island of Hawaii. We are not yet as sophisticated as any of the 50 states.

I doubt you would walk around any urban area in Hawaii at night. The same goes here.

Good Luck with your move.

There is also a standard Cost U Less site but doesn't really have much to do with our "reality". Most of us do what we call the triangle. Mine starts at Food Center for the veggies although Cost U Less is starting to give them some competition then Plaza Extra for the only place on island for Bean And Bacon Soup which the hubby can't live without and then Cost ULess for the basics and the only dog food the silly chihuahua will eat without making my life miserable. Fill in here and there at Marina Market. And remember, don't get too fixated on prices ... it's food and you are going to buy it so why fret?

RE: walking around at night ? Why would you? A stroll in your neighborhood is one thing but walking after dark as transportation is not a good idea here or most anywhere. People have the idea that Red Hook is safe and that is pretty true if you stay within sight of the American Yacht Harbor and Red Hook Plaza but elsewhere the turf wars are beginning to become more engaged. Drugs are moving into Red Hook in a disturbing way. I am normally oblivious to this sort of thing but am hearing more and more of the bad things that are happening in Red Hook.

Overall, this is a great place to live but the real world has intruded in the last ten years. With common sense, you can negotiate this island very well.

WOW! Check out Plaza Extra's site! The site is still under construction, but I knew most of the people in the picture by first name. Thanks, MsInfo, will try to remember to keep following up.

Pueblo is part of the same chain in Puerto Rico.

I assumed since big island was not capitalized, it was not Hawaii? Also, the questions seemed a little "closer" Either way, glad to help, if I can.
