I will be relocating to STX in January. I will be homeschooling my twin daughters who will be 16 at that time. I am concerned about thier social lives. I was wondering if anyone knew of clubs or groups they can socialize with thier age?

Dear Shelly,

Have you researched this forum about home-schooling? As far as I recall there have been several posts here about home-schooling both on STT and STX, so do check it all out. To the best of my knowledge (and also from what I've read on this forum) there are several really good schools on STX which will not only give your daughters a good education but will also enable them to interact with their peers in s healthy and productive environment.

Please do check out the numerous posts on the subject - and I'm sure you'll otherwise get plenty of responses from those on St. Croix in a similar situation!

STT Resident,
Yes, I have checked out the posts, but the cost of those private schools for 2 children is just way more than I can afford right now. Thanks for your concern though. 🙂

Shelley,

Try taking your daughters to some of the sporting events at Good Hope or Country Day Schools. They can chat with other teens, make some friends, and very soon they'll be invited to participate in various activities. There are fewer girls than guys in most of the classes, so there will be some smiles from the male half of the student population when your girls show up. They don't have to miss out on the high school activities experience, even if they are being home-schooled.

If your girls are into swimming or dancing, there are private clubs for those activities where they could also meet other teens. Encourage them to be out-going and introduce themselves when they see other kids their age on the island. Most will welcome the new arrivals. They have a small enough peer group that they're bound to get bored with each other and need someone new to talk to. Also, many of the teens have themselves relocated here within the past few years and recall how eager they were to make new friends.

Based on Shelly's question, I hope that any of you out there on STX who know of afterschool activities for teens will respond to her question, and not question her decision to homeschool for whatever her reasons. How about it, anyone else willing to answer her?

Thanks Alexandra!! I appreciate that info. I didn't know homeschooled teens could go to the private school athletic activities! That will really help! They need that interaction!

Thanks again!

Shelly
