As a health freak, I am wondering weather to accept a job offered as a nurse in St. Thomas. I have been trying to get the facts on how clean the air is in St. Thomas, does anybody know about the quality of the air in St. Thomas?

Is air quality your only consideration? (I honestly don't know about that--seems OK)

As a self-proclaimed "health freak" do you require:

1. Great full service gyms?
2. Organic foods?
3. Running trails or bike paths?
4. A health-oriented society?

All of these will likely be in less supply than they are wherever you live now.

Air quality is not my only consideration..... but it is one of the few I cant control. I have my own equiptement so working out not a problem, for organic foods I order my veggies(i am a vegetarian) from a company in Florida who can ship to St. Thomas overnight weekly.... but air quality is a concern of mine partly because I have mild asthma. So if anyone knows information then please tell me.

I'm a Registered Respiratory Therapist at Roy L Schneider hospital on St Thomas & I must say that your question makes me LOL! I'd be more concerned about crime & punishment here.

There is ALWAYS a Caribbean wind blowing here, therefore THERE is no LINGERING air polution. Sure, if you go downtown to Charlotte Amalie during the day when the taxi train is encircled & fighting off the cruise ship crowd you might sniff some exhaust fumes, don't worry though we have a comfortable EndoTracheal Tube & ventilator waiting for you in the ER! We'll be glad to book you a room, tune up your lungs & have you on your way in no time!

Are you considring a travel assignment or permanent staff position?

I have other comments but I'll save those for later...

I am considering a temporary staff position, maybe turning into a permanent job since I have always loved the tropics. I have lived in Oahu, Hawaii which is known for its very clean air so i was happy there lol.

HL,

Sounds like you need specific statistical-type info. Sorry, can't provide that.

For what it is worth, on the plus side there is virtually no heavy industry here, so that would point toward lower pollutants, I would think.

Also, it tends to be pretty breezy, so that should help blow pollutants out to sea.

On the other hand, in the city the traffic is horrible, so there are a lot of cars idling at any given time.

Good luck.

So does THAT mean you are considering a travel assignment WHICH YOU HOPE turns into a permanent staff position offer?

Are you in Hawaii now?

Hey Healthy Lungs,

What is the name of the company that can overnight fruit here?

Sounds expensive...is it?

I don't think I would do it every week, but it might be nice for a treat.

Thanks.

I do not live in Hawaii right now, now I love in New York. I have a friend in Florida(who I met in Hawaii) who runs the organic food so I get a MAJOR discounted price lol. And it isnt just fruit that they send over, it is veggies, fruit, nuts, and other healthy snacks, all grown organicly. But how is the air quality??

I am hoping this turns into a permanent job if all goes well.

Parrot Head, you are one funny but sick puppy.

Healthy lungs, I'd be more concerned about UV over exposure rather than air quality. Winds always blowing. It is a small island.

Re:air pollution, the breezes seem to take care of stuff in the air, you might want to be upwind of the landfill...The only other problems are 1. summertime and the Sahara dust and 2. when the volcano in Monserrat decides to belch. Re: shipping organic veggies privately, Customs may be interested in that!! Lots of vegetarians here, between rastas and Seventh Day folk, so you won't be alone. BTW, if you are looking for things to be like they are in Hawaii or in New York, you are going to be sorely disapponted.
