Another STT vs STX advice seeker

Hello All 🙂

My boyfriend and I are moving to the Virgin Islands in August 2011. I am going to be teaching and he would like to work in the restaurant/ bartending business. As of now, it appears more teaching opportunities are in STX (STT is on a hiring freeze, although I know it's way early and this will change before the next school year). We know there is much opportunity for my boyfriend on STT once we arrive, however, are more hesitant with STX. So, for my benefit, St. Croix is the safer option, while for his, St.Thomas sounds the obvious choice (or maybe not?).

Advice on restaurant/bartending business on either or both islands would be much appreciated and useful for us!

Thank you!!

It really comes down to what you want out of life. STX is more quiet than STT. Although I am not a teacher I would believe that if STT has a freeze then STX does too. The island is going through a period, as it the main land, of spending much more than it has. The word here is cut expenses. That includes teachers. I would make sure that you have a contract with whom ever before you count on the job. The VI has a problem getting approval for new hires.

Stt has more bat tending oppertunity than STX. But there is more competition. But the costs to live are less than on STT.

So there is no easy answer to your question. You also might want to contact private schools.

Good luck

The end of Aug is a hard time to find bar work since it is out of season.
Good luck!
I like STX much better, not as crowded.

While I live on STT I love STX as well, go there once a week for work. Both are nice and each has its strengths and weaknesses. StX is much less expensive and very laid back. I chose STT because I sail and there is easier access to the BVI's, and grfeat sailing.Teaching might be best if you try the private schools rather than public.

With the Hovensa layoffs happening on STX, I know for a fact that the private schools will be directly affected. We've already lost 5 students at Country Day, and there's a budget talk scheduled for this week to determine what cutbacks may need to occur in order to compensate.

Thanks so much for your feedback!

St.Croix public schools currently have openings in math, language arts, and special ed. (all three of my qualifications). So, again, leaning towards here. tough decisions!!!!

Your comments definitely help us think about our options.

thanks again!
