What's the best place to go out to eat in Christiansted? We are staying at the Hotel Caravelle on our Pre-move visit and would love to find a few places in walking distance.

Try Tu Tu Bene ( spelling?). They have graet Italian food, Pricing about what you would pay for a very good meal in the states.

I second the suggestion for Tutto Bene. Excellent house salad and very generous portions!

Hello,

In Christiansted try Rumrunners - good happy hour. And also the Brew Pub. For a fine dinner try Bacchus. And for an inexpensive lunch try Golden Rail (its over in Gallows Bay). Stixx is ok too.

Can't think of the little cafe's name; small spot in one of the alleys, but it has great breakfast and good prices (hopefully someone knows where I am talking about and will give the name).

Tutto Bene is excellent, however, another suggestion is Kendrick's Restaurant. They are located right in C'sted in an historic building with a lovely backyard courtyard full of beautiful palm trees and other tropical plants. The food and service are CONSISTENTLY excellent and you will have one of the best meals of your life, guaranteed!

My bad...Tutto Bene is absolutely NOT within walking distance of the Caravelle.
Rumrunner's is actually in the Hotel Caravelle and is quite good for lunches.
I've heard really good things about Kendrick's and from islandjoan's description it sounds like it is in C'sted proper? May be your best bet!
Also, if Savant is still open you might be able to walk there. It is 1/2 block down from Fort Christian and really great food and ambiance.

Kendricks will give you a fine dinning experience comparable to what you would expect in NY or Chicago. The only time we had any issues was the one evening it started to rain then stopped, then started, etc. so we were constantly jumping around trying to find a dry spot to sit.

We did Christmas dinner at Kendricks in 2004 and all our guests were quite satisfied.

If you want to spring for a taxi try the Terrace Lounge at the Buccanner for drinks. Beaufiful place to watch days end. They have a lovely dinning room, but I never thought the food or service were good enought to justify the prices they charge.

Enjoy your stay. There are at least twenty restraunts worth visiting, but many of them are not in walking distance.

E X C U S E M E, but who wants to visit the islands for italian food? How about some good burgers and seafood with a view!

RUMRUNNERS is consistently good and has a GREAT "peel & eat" shrimp appetizer that is big enough for a meal...then try their CRUZAN DAQUIRI. The Mix has a few unique tropical style dishes too. And yes, Brew Pub (especially if you like fresh brewed draft beer). All these are on the boardwalk and right where you are staying.

Have Fun!

For local food, check out Harvey's and Kim's. Rumrunners is good, and Luncheria has great Mexican food!

The Bombay is a good place to eat. It will look like it is closed from the street, but go in anway.

That little place with great breakfasts that you can't remember is Shenanigan's. Closed on Sunday. Had breakfast there every day on our last visit (except Sunday).

I always stay at the Caravelle (wonderful staff and location). The dining in Christiansted (and in my opinion):
FINE DINING - Savant, Bacchus, Kendricks
REALLY GOOD DINING - Bombay Club (named after the gin, not the city), Rumrunners
GOOD CASUAL DINING - Pleasant's, Brew Pub, Paradise Cafe, Luncheria (ok, it's Mexican, but cheap and delicious!)
GREAT LOCAL FOOD - Harvey's (lunch only), Kim's
HAPPY HOUR - Rumrunners, Rumrunners, Rumrunners, Brew Pub
LUNCH - Cafe Christine
BREAKFAST - Shenanigans, The Golden Rail (in Gallows Bay marina - a nice walk in daylight)

If you have a car and want to get out of town a little bit:
FINE DINING - Duggan's Reef, Tutto Bene (I would NEVER walk to Tutto Bene after dark - it is just NOT wise to do so), H2O
CASUAL DINING - Off the Wall (great view and great burgers!)

This is just off the top of my head, so I'm sure I'm leaving something out. A few comments:
In Christiansted I avoid Stixx and Club Comanche - service is ???? as is food. Be sure to take in the nightly tarpon feeding at sunset at Rumrunners - it's quite a sight! The Mix has a nice ambience, but it is pricey and my lunch was slow and tasted off. Good drinks though.

Two sites to check out:

http://www.stcroixscuba.com/restaurants.htm I generally agree with his reviews, but he hasn't had a chance to update the site since 12/04 so some of these places have closed. So, also check out http://www.print2webcorp.com/news/virginislands-sc/splash.asp . Restaurant descriptions start on p. 45, but the whole book is an excellent guide (if you're not already familiar with it). It's available in printed version all over the island. Also available on island is "Dining Out in St. Croix" which contains some actual menus.

Thank you all so much!!! This has all been very helpful. What else is there to check out besides resturaunts? We want to look into as much as possible, seeing as this trip will help us decide if we are gonna move there or not next April/May. What else should we do to get a better feel of the island and island life.

Thanks to all-
Brooks

Joanne's list was very good!

Also try Cafe Bleu, which is in the location on Company Street where the original Tutto Bene operated until they moved to a larger facility.

I suspect that the cafe Islander was trying to recall is Pleasant's, next to King's Alley Hotel.

Tutto Bene is not just for Italian food, by the way. They have fabulous seafood specialties every day, as well as Duck, Veal, a 2" pork chop/loin served on the bone (fabulous!), and many other wonderful selections. Their soups are nothing short of amazing.

Check out Case Place in the Gallow's Bay area, too.

If you do get a car and go exploring:
On the north shore road heading west from Christiansted, stop in at Elizabeth's. The food is always very good and somewhat different from the other menus on the island.

At Salt River, hit Columbus Cove for lunch. They have some island seafood specialties that should be checked out.

Frederiksted also has some good food options:
San Tropez is a French inspired restaurant in downtown.
Lost Dog is a bar that is popular for its pizza.
Stop for hot dogs and other "day on the beach" type food at Changes in l'Attitude.
Rhythms at Rainbow Beach has sushi on Friday nights.
Sunset Grill has excellent food for both lunch and dinner and you can enjoy a nice sunset meal while sitting at a table on the beach with your feet buried in the sand. Aaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!
There are more... but how much can one person eat?

for Sushi you are typically restricted to the F'sted side of the island. Rhythms at Rainbow Beach now has sushi every Friday night. Previously, Sunset Grill had sushi every Wednesday, but during the summer they have cut back to occasional Wednesdays. Hopefully that will increase to weekly very soon!

And to think that I used to not be willing to eat sushi due to a few bad (food poisoning) experiences when I first tried it years ago. Having much of the fish locally caught does help. Gotta love the tuna!

I agree with much of what everyone else has said.

I go to Shennanigan’s every Saturday for there banana pancakes. Kenndricks and Café Bleu are both awesome, everything they do is good. I just tried the new restaurant Giovanni’s it’s on Strand street right across from the caravelle arcade. It was awesome, the service was the best I’ve had on island and everything was very tasty. If you have a car and can get out of Christiansted I would recommend Elizabeth’s on north side road, it’s only a few minute drive outside of Chst’d. And if you want a fun beach bar Off the Wall on the northshore is good for a burger and a nice sunset.

Sushi- Energy has sushi on Wednesday night, it’s always good.

I would highly recommend that you rent a car. Our first trip there was at Christmas time, and we didn't think we would need a car. When we realized we wanted one, there were all rented out. So in May we reserved a car and was much happier. In August we are renting one again for two weeks.
I would also going on a island tour with a local gentleman named Sweeney. It is a very nice tour.

Thanks! We do plan to rent a car and I have heard several people talk of Sweeney's tour. I will be sure to check into that. How far in advance do you think I should reserve a rental car?
