Any relocated teachers out there?

Hi!

I am looking for some information on teaching in the USVIs. I am planning a 1 year move to St. Croix (probably). While I don't plan on teaching for that 1 year I want to know that if we decided to stay longer I would be able to continue my career. I have looked at the DPI web site for the Islands and have searched around a bit. I have not focused on private schools at all, though I would be open to private schools if public schools for some reason were not viable.

Here are my stats:
Early 30's Caucasian female
Master's in education
Middle School English LA certification - state of North Carolina
5 years teaching experience
Currently work in a very large middle school with similar socioeconomic demographics to islands (I have looked at School Improvement Plans and the communities' similarities are: low economic and educational status, low parent involvement, below grade level performance, rural, housing projects/section 8 residents)

So what do you think? What have your experiences been?

Thanks so much for your help. I want a big change, but I will always want to be a teacher!
Liz

You should have no problem finding a job. The public schools have great need, but the pay isn't too good, I hear. My wife teaches Spanish, English and French in a private school....and just has a BA in French!

Thanks for the confidence boost! Was your wife a teacher in the states?

My husband and I are both teachers in the public school system. Yes, the pay is lower than in the states, but if you want to make a difference and you are teaching for the right reasons, please come down and join us. Good teachers are in high demand!

Do a search for all my previous posts, and you'll find quite a few things that I've posted about teaching down here. And, if you have specific questions, feel free to PM.

Good luck!

MY wife tutored in the states and taught French at one school for a time, but she does not have a teacher's certificate......
Meowruff knows the score. Listen to her and good luck! (my wife says there's no such thing as luck....)

Do you have to have license in order to teach? I have a BBA in Economics and have never been a teacher. I've pretty much been self-employed since I left college.

Without license, am I still able to apply? What are my chances of gaining employment? How will a lack of licensure impact my salary expectations?

Thank you
