Hello my future island neighbors!

I am from Seattle, graduated from UW in june 2010, and will be moving to STT in the beginning of December. Anyone else from the West Coast relocate from the island? How do you like it? What do you miss the most? (probably not the rain)

The thing I am worried about the most at this point is not knowing anyone moving there. I have read the comments about being assertive and networking and just getting out there. All of which i am capable of doing. Just curious if there is anyone who would be down getting a drink with me, maybe showing me around a little bit, or someone I could just bounce thoughts off in my beginnings of a big transition. Plus, I need someone to watch the Huskies play in the bowl game this year on the internet with me!

It won't be raining much longer. You'll be sad when your cistern runs out! 😛

Seattlite, you shouldn't have trouble finding anyone to go for a drink or show you around. People here are very friendly. I moved to STT just over a year ago, if you have questions that I can answer, I'll be glad to.

My wife and I moved here from Seattle. Microsoft Alumni 1997. Moved here in 1998. We get a lot more sunshine here than we did in Seattle. And the water is warmer.

We live on STX. We used to live out off of Redmond-Fall City Road.

Hello Seattle2STT,

Moving back to STT on Nov 30th. I moved to Seattle in 1984 had some babies, babies are grown and I have a one way ticket back. I am planning on finishing my BA at UVI starting in Jan. I plan on staying for a week at Sapphire and hopefully finding a cheap studio for rent, preferably on the east end. I am hoping to find a job bartending as soon as I can. Since I have lived there before I know what to expect when I arrive and I can't wait, I am so tired of the rat race and BS up here I look forward to island time. I could use someone to have a drink and hang out with, what are your plans? Do you have a place to live yet?

first of all Thank You VIsnorkeler. I will try and hit you up once I arrive. You guys all have a very calming presence on this forum. the funny thing about this move is its a big choice, a big moment in my life, but I am incredibly calm and at ease with the decision. There is a few things I have to take care of and prepare for but not really that much when I step back. All your info so far has been incredibly helpful.

anyways, 2chpters! sounds like an intriguing situation we both have. I will be arriving early december and would love to buy you a drink, pick your brain a little. again, just have someone to talk to my first days there. I will probably be coming with a friend and we will be looking to find a place together, but we would be willing to go three on a place if it would be beneficial to us all. get something decent and still pay a reasonable amount. What is your budget for rent?

I am not sure where I should live. I need to find a job first I think so I can live in a place that will make it possible for me to get to work without hiking 4 miles/day (even though I am willing to make tough situations work). I have applied to the home depot and sent some feeler emails out to some tour type places. Next I will be contacting some hotels to see what that work situation is like. My point is I will be looking for anything to pay the bills and I wont have a car right away. I will ship my outback once I have decided I will actually be living there for an extended amount of time for sure.

I assumed I should stay around charlotte amalie because that is where the cruise ships come in. that is where the tourists will be around. and that is where the jobs will be. It is a small island though. What are your thoughts on this? Do you think I could have just as much luck on the east end or most other places on the island for finding work?

We have the same average rainfall here as Portland- 45". Of course, it comes in torrents like today with L-O-N-G dry spells in between.;)

If you are looking for tourist work, you could be in town or east end. You should take a good look around.

We don't just live on the cruise ship tourists. If we did, I wouldn't have a job! 😮 Keep your options open. It is hard, but don't make any assumptions before you arrive!
