Apartment Scam?
Hello!
I will be on St. Thomas with my husband next week and we are setting up appointments to look at spaces for rent. We are trying to work with realtors, but most of their units are not pet friendly. We saw a place on Craigslist and I reached out. I got a phone call back and the landlord offered to pick us up at the dock to look at the space (we are coming in on a cruise ship).
It's a B&B renovated into rentals - used to be the Garden of the Silver Palm. I googled the address and can't find anything about it and wanted to see if anyone has any info. I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.
I don't know the property. But I have a question. Are you looking for a short term place to rent while you look for something more permanent? Because, there are recommended places you could rent for a month or so while you search for something longer term. I would check with Ronnie at http://www.crystalpalaceusvi.com/. He is the man in the know... And IMHO, you should not look at properties on your cruise ship day. If it is part of your PMV, drive around and see what various parts of the island are like, visit K-Mart, Plaza Extra, Cost-U-Less. Most of the long term properties that are pet friendly will be found through networking and driving around in an area you like, looking for signs. And you need to know what area you like from being here...
This is what it used to be.

It's just above town, located on or by Bunker Hill, I believe.
No street parking to the best of my knowledge.
Ask landlord. I personally don't know the landlord or building.
Be aware that what you're going to be looking at may not be available for rent when you move so basically a waste of time that could be spent checking out the island, where you might end up working in relationship to living, etc.as eastender mentioned.
Coming in on a cruise ship in "season" is possibly the worst way to conduct a pmv, IMO. Gives you very little time for anything constructive.
I do know the property and the landlord and she is a good lady.
If you are thinking of working in town and doing w/o a vehicle the location would work.
Thanks for the info! We are mainly just trying to have a safe, furnished space on the island while we get our feet wet. If we find the right place, we will stay longer term, but we are no stranger to moving, so we can always upgrade later after being on the island and figuring out what we like.
Thanks again!

Thanks for the info. Yeah, we know this isn't the best way, but we booked the cruise long before we made this decision - so it's all we got right now. Luckily I have two realtors helping us as well and have several appointments to look at spaces. We can always move in sooner if needed.
Thank you for confirming about this property - I always like to do a little more research when Craigslist is involved. 🙂

Awesome - thank you! We will buy a car when we get there - our current one is not suitable for the island!
ktengstrom: I'm not sure if you are even following this board anymore. I saw your post on What's Going on St Thomas. Marty (!!) referred you to the Moving Center. You commented that although you had read 90% of the information, the moving stories were old and that you felt WGOST was up-to-date. You certainly were getting up-to-date info when you asked questions. You just didn't ask us if rollerskating was a good idea or if there were softball leagues. You would have gotten answers on both here. 😉
While I do look at WGOST, I don't think it is the best place for thoughtful information on moving here. The whole Facebook thing is more about quick answers and going on to the next lost dog or power outage. (Not that they don't talk power outages here!) Anyway, I hope that you will come back and ask your questions.
BTW. I don't think that moving here is really that different now from when some of us moved here years ago. The stories still hold truths within them. And I do wish that some of the newbies would write a story for Islander to save for others.
Good luck with your move!
