My fiance and I are moving down sometime in August. I know its best to start looking for a job once I'm actually there but I was curious if there are a lot of government agencies on the island? I have a bachelors degree in public management and would like to put it to use. Does anyone have information on these types of jobs? Where I can look? Thanks in advance!

The government jobs are all posted at the Labor Department. You are right, you'll have to go down there when you get here! I wouldn't hold my breath for a management job with the local government! 😉 Is there something else you can do?

Oh - I'm not necessarily looking for a management position, just a job in government, even a secretary! I have a friend that works for a government agency in Washington DC and the work seems enjoyable and her benefits package is out of this world! I was hoping with my public affairs degree would help - thanks for the tip on the labor dept!

If you are looking for a Federal job you might try to look through Washington somehow. There are only a few agencies represented here: Customs, Immigration, Justice, etc. The territorial government jobs for the most part go to local folks, unless you are a nurse, teacher, respiratory therapist 😉

And those of us in healthcare don't want to be VI Gov't employees.

Hello,

Getting a federal or territorial gov't job in the USVI is tough. Nepotism is almost a rule when it comes to filling office positions in the local government, exceptions are for "professional" positions like teaching, healthcare, biologist etc. You might look into applying for a job with the university in one of the offices there or maybe the large resorts or business offices - as a backup for the government job. In any case Good Luck!!

Job searches for job with the federal government can be done on the website http://jobsearch.usajobs.opm.gov/index.asp with VI being the initials for the USVI. There normally are not many jobs in the USVI, but it doesn't hurt to look.
