This morning while tending the pool, we discovered a little chow mix under the back stairs, sleeping. He doesn't seem aggressive.....he's actually very timid/shy. He warmed a bit to a couple hot dogs I cut up and gave him....but we can't keep him, or keep encouraging him to be here by feeding him. He appears intact, so if anything, I'd like to see if there's something on the island to 'fix' him so he doesn't reproduce more strays.

I'm not sure where to turn on this. I don't want to see him collared and thrown away like trash, but I don't know if he's material to be given a home- as his purple tongue and slightly full neckline say chow-chow, and that breed historically has to be worked with from puppy-hood on to not be a bit difficult. The rest of him looks to be lab....he's a handsome fellow other than being a bit scruffy from being a stray....

So, forum-goers, is there a resource for me to call to get him taken care of in a good sense? We're near the Salt River Marina and Columbus Landing if anyone might have lost him-- but without a collar and being very wary of people I think he's just a stray.

Hey RandyNTaj,

We are dealing with the same issue on the street below you in Salt River.
I have 2 strays that I'm feeding and trying to get them to trust me. The one dog is a young pit bull mix. So cute. The other one looks like a fox because of it's bushy tail.
I'm on a waiting list at the shelter for a trap.

You can call the animal shelter to see if anyone is missing the dog. 778-1650
If you can get it to trust you, you can grab him up and take him to the shelter. I just did that with 2 dogs, one was a chow mix.

I was chatting with someone from a vet clinic on FB and the dog in question (mine) was brought in by someone. They're going to check him out and keep me posted. 7 months old....and hopefully he will get a good home. Keep me posted on your situation- as they may come up my way as well. I'll do what I can to help get them off the streets in a good way.

In very un-island timing.....puppy has a home. Someone picked him up just after he left our house.....and took him to the vet. He's been checked out, and adopted. He will be flying home next week to CO (where we're from!) and will get to play in the snow. How awesome is that!!
