Ok, yesterday the hub & I had a fairly sizeable check drwn on Banco. We didn't want to open an accnt there, just wanted a sm amount of cash & the balance in a cashiers check. Would have just deposited into our bank here (1st).............but needed some cash like right now & they give you a 24 hr run-a-round.
So we go to the Orange Grove branch.............have a window right there as you enter the bank............however you need to go inside & wait in line.............amazing how suddenly when it became our turn, tellers were just too busy ............ and we waited & waited & waited.............like friggin 10-15 mins. Finally we are called back out to the window out side the lobby.
Gave the teller our big check, asked for some cash & bal in cashiers check, told it would be 15 bucs & we said go for it!
She then goes away & comes back informing us that since we do not have an account there, we couldn't get a cashier check & to take our check back to the originator so he could do it........WTF??? Did I ask for a certified check............no, a stinking cashier check so I won't be on the streets w/ soooo much cash!!! She disappears again & comes back..............no can't give you a check...........how about a money order............no.............how about just cash...............YES...............WTF, who'd in their right mind would cash a check for that amount of money??? All she asked for was a drivers licence.............no additional info............no finger print......no forms to sign (fed law requires reporting cash amounts in this sum!!!!). She cashes the check & hands us a white budging envelope & said have a nice day. Where was the manager???? Thankfully there was a security guard there (who was shocked as well in the lg sum of CASH), and I waited with her as the hub retrieves the car............then we went to our bank & deposited into our accounts.
Only in STX!!!!

I missed something, why not go to your own bank in the first place?

Linda, I was thinking the same thing. I would suspect that perhaps Islandtyme had some suspicions as to whether the check would clear or not, and decided to go directly to the source to get her funds. Also, she may have wanted some immediate cash, and her own bank would probably put a hold on the check until it cleared.

Yes, but there is nothing that the person cashing the check or making the deposit has to sign.

So after they cashed the check for the entire amount, why not then turn around and buy a cashiers check or money order with the green cash they gave you?
I do not think they can refuse to do so unless it is policy that cashiers checks and money orders are only done for their customers.
Your story seems to indicate such a policy.

BTW...you said the check being cashed was on an account at that bank. That is why it was okay to cash it and give you the money because they checked the account to see if the funds were there to cover the check. Instantly.

You don't have to highlight anything, simply click the "quote" button.
BTW, I highlighted just your word "greetings" and then hit the quote button and it guoted your entire message instead.

This is a test.

Didn't mean to hijack the thread. All of the banks here can be a little difficult at times, and like with many other things, it depends on who you talk to on what day. Scotia is the only bank where you can exchange for Euros. My friend was going to Europe, and she doesn't have an account at Scotia. They told her no way. I have an account, so she and I went together to buy the Euros. The teller never asked, just exchanged the money. And, no, she didn't recognize me. I seldom, seldom go in the bank.

Thanks! Looks like it worked.

SIGH.................................I've spent several years in the banking industry & this was just stoooopid!
Would have taken it to OUR bank, but even on a "LOCALLY DRAWN CHECK" our bank would have place a 24hr hold & will NOT disburse any funds for 24 hrs, altho federal law states you can have $100 same day, here its 24 hrs. Needed the money right away, so all we wanted was some cash & the balance in a cashier check. No, to that. Even after they cashed the check we offered to pay what ever fee they wanted & NO NO NO ................ did I mention they said NO................no account no anything but cash.
The amount of the check cashed was under a FERDRAL law that requires reporting this!!! Not to mention the only ID my hub was requred to show was his drivers licence............we could have forged it.
Funny how the fact y'all are in a happy lil state of mind here & allow island tradition superseed federal laws & think its just peachy friggin keen. The point I was making, who in the right mind will cash a check w/1 id.........for a large sum of money & deny any other services, which fees for the services benefit the bank.
Never mind................I forgot where I live

Come'on Islandtyme I know your frustrated but don't take it out on us. You've lived here long enough you should be able to accept and move on. All the banks here are horrible. I won't use them. I seriously woulnd't even trust the fdic insurance down here. Avoid the frustrations you can and you'll be alot happier. And take a book or magazine with you in your purse always for the things you can't avoid. Your frustration will only hurt you, the locals aren't going to change anytime soon so you HAVE to accept it, outsiders only make up about 4% of the population.

One of the business I work for still uses Scotia (yuck!) and I wait in line 45 minutes all the time. Its reality here, it may not be stateside but it is here. Living here is not like living stateside.

If you feel they broke federal law then get involved and do something but you can't blame us for not wanting to fight your battle. With your banking experience I would assume you would know who to report them to.

We all know things like this suck on a daily basis and I feel your pain but you just have to get over it or do something.

I didn't ask anyone to fight m y battle for me........many vent on here & as others I vented too.
Get involved, been there & done that .................I now have a flat face from all the walls & doors I've run into.
I love where I live, however it just really makes your cratch your head. Some days more than others, so Betty if you took offence & thought I was asking y'all to storm the bank in protest I wasn't.................Now had it been storming the gov house...............lol

Ya, I gotta say, I really enjoy your posts islandtyme... they crack me up... you are one feisty little fillie! Between you and TRW (and many others) it keeps me checking on this forum's posts WAY more than I should. I really can't wait to meet all of you folks. I'd love to have everyone meet at a bar one night... no one is allowed to say who they are... the challenge is to figure out who is who. I'm just going to ask people about check-cashing and see whose head explodes.
