We closed our stateside account and opened FirstBank account here in Fsted. Never had a problem in any of the branches in STX. Never waited in horrendous lines, never experienced rude customer service. And we never had any problems with deposits, checks, etc. The only downside is the online banking is lagging behind (up to a week).

And so you see the problem - different people have different experiences. In this, like in so many other things, you're going to have to see what works for you.
When ric and I moved, we brought cash and a cashier's check from our stateside bank. We opened a vi bank account, got settled and after two months, I went back to finish up my job. I spent at 2 month's at my dad's finishing work. When I left I closed our stateside account. That overlap did make the money transfer easier.

Seven banks and credit unions are listed in the yellow pages at http://www.viphonebook.com/

We used Bank of St. Croix for ten years and highly recommend them as well. Personal and generally quick service, zero issues.

OP, you may want to check out Merchant's Bank on STT. I've banked with Scotia for many years after they took over Barclays when the latter stopped doing business here donkey's years ago. After several ups and downs over the years with Scotia, one huge muck-up a year ago with a wire transfer tested my patience to such a degree that I opened an account with Merchants. They don't yet have my full business but, so far, my dealings with them have been exemplary and, when some current financial issues are resolved, I plan on moving everything over to them.

Their set-up is not the usual. No tellers, no long lines, most of their banking can be done online and they use Scotia's ATM facilities. They're FDIC regulated. Take a look-see and talk to them.

ROF. 2 pages for a simple answer: do whatever YOU want to, VI or stateside banks. Both will work.
