What are the major banking institutions on St. Thomas? Are there any banks that also do business stateside. I am thinking I may switch to one of those banks now while I am still on the mainland.

Also, I am moving to St. Thomas April 1st. Is anyone else moving around that same time? I would love to find a roommate 🙂

Let me know...

Thanks,
Brandon

Brandon -

There are 3 banks down here: First Bank, Banco Popular (both out of Puerto Rico), and Scotia Bank (which I believe is Canadian). I use First Bank, and am not much impressed with the service, but I think that is symptomatic of all of them.

PS - I was born in Nevada, and am originally from Eureka, NV.

Do you know if I would be able to find First Bank Stateside? And I agree with you, you'll find problems at any bank 🙂

I don't think any of the 3 have stateside branches - maybe Scotia? Quite a bit of discussion about roomates on some of the threads - keep your eyes peeled.

I'd have to agree with Max about Firstbank. I've only been with them for a couple weeks and am probably going to close my accout. They offer online banking, unfortunatly they don't provide it (in a true sense).

Do any of the banks on the VI have websites. I would like to look into opening an acocunt by mail, so I would like to do a little research first.

Thank you very much,

-Brandon

I know that Banco Popular has branches in New York City, so they may have some in other Eastern states. Also, their online banking is not bad. I pay a majority of my bills online and have not had a problem thus far. The service inside the banks, however, is abysmal and should be avoided at all costs. Get direct deposit or deposit your checks through the ATMs.

Hello Brandon,

Last time I checked you had to be in person to open a bank account here in the VI... look into it.

The VI Bankers Web site has a list of members with addresses/telephone number/web site links.

We just got a mortgage for our condo through FirstBank and they allowed us to open a savings account through the mail. It was so that we could EFT the money for the closing, so it can be done. They were very helpful.
