Bartending, can I survive off of it?

Taxi fares can really add up on STJ. There is a bus for a 1$ that travels around but as I gather it is not necessarily specific as to its stops and times. Also taxis are not always interested in traveling somewhere if they don't have a few fares to take. It is pretty hilly for a bike but I suppose great exercise. Just watch the narrow and windy roads. Apparently hitch hiking is acceptable but as a single female it still doesn't entice me. I have done it a couple of time with my husband and that is fine. Often you are just sitting in the bed of a pick up anyway. Definitely something to consider in your moving costs. We will bring our car with us so we have the opportunity to take an apartment out of the way if it is nice and affordable.

have been using the forum research tool and that has been helpful

I saw a string on scooters and will look into that when I get there. I did read good and bad things about using one. So I guess I'll just have to wait till I get there and decide for myself what will work best. A bike would be OK but was concerned about trying to get home late at night after work. How safe would that be?

Found a site for a company that offers health coverage and currently I am waiting for a quote for that. I have been without health coverage for a while now and must say I'd rather have it than not. It's such a shame that those in the food business rarely get health benefits or vacation time.

Alexis, I would have to say that a scooter does not seem very safe at night as it can be very dark on the roads and since the cars drive on the left but are still meant for the right, the headlights can be wierd. Plus the streets are narrow andtourists often get confused. We did a couple of times but with no harm. Unfortunately, a friend of my mothers was killed by a car while vactioning on the island many years ago. Whether she was on a bike or walking she got dragged for a ways. Maybe you can carpool with others that you work with or they will have a more low cost solution for you. I know health care can be tricky and I have been without it before but inevitably I have had to go to the hospital for something stupid like swimmers ear! Fortunately my husband will continue to have insurance. Good luck. Maybe I will see you around in June when I am down for a visit. Let us know where you work when you are settled!

If it's STJ, I'm not sure I'd go the bike or scooter route. Blind curves, blind hill crests, no bike lanes 🙂 and soft shoulders.

I've seen tourists on their cute yellow scooters with their cute helmets, trying to get up cute hills.
