I've been lurking around this board for quite a while now and the people posting seem amazingly courteous and helpful . The advice and information have been top notch. I'm not new to the islands but it has been many years (about 11) since I've been down. The first trip was back in 1988 on Easter weekend. After a few drinks at a local bar, myself and two friends decided to drive to the airport and fly anywhere where it was sunny and warm. The first flight we seen posted was St Thomas so that's where we headed. Being in my early 20's with no responsibilities made this an easy thing to do. We arrived on a Sunday morning with a toothbrush, sunglasses and suntan lotion....that's all. We stayed at the Ramada Yacht haven for 3 days. Needless to say we all had a blast. Our second day there we rented a boat and went to Jost for the day. We were the only customers at the Soggy Dollar Bar. At the time the bartender was a guy by the name of Joe Louis (does anyone remember him?). He was great. We also met Wendell and Gregory (Foxy's sons).I remember Jost having no electricity or roads at the time. I can see things there perked up a bit in the last 18 years 🙂 Well enough reminiscing....for now. If things pan out I hope to be on St John in about a year. I'm a realist and I plan on staying only about 6 months to see if I like it. If it turns out that I do, then I would like to open a small bar and/or restaurant. Any comments feel free to chime in.

Lou

That must have been before a hurricane destroyed the Ramada. Unless you noticed a few walls missing...:) The new Yacht Haven is being built. You should see the progress. I found it amazing. The locals still call it the Ramada even though it 's new name is Yacht Haven Grande. Anyway, good luck on your dream. In my opinion, coming with a short term plan (6 months) is a great idea. You just don't know til you try. Also, I recommend planning your six months during the winter months - nothing worse than leaving the islands to come back to bitter cold. I left island recently and it will be 34 degrees (Fahrenheit) tonight in Atlanta, GA!!! I want my warm weather back. Nuff bout me...
